About the Author
Jack Goody is Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St John's College. Recently knighted by Her Majesty The Queen for services to anthropology, Professor Goody has researched and taught all over the world, is a Fellow of the British Academy and in 1980 was made a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2004 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and he was elected Commandeur des Arts et Lettres in 2006.

Encapsulation of the variety of genres of oral literature in traditional society

This book consists of 9 essays written by Professor Goody from Cambridge University which are of fundamental interest to anthropologists and social scientists.
The key objective of this book is to disconfirm structuralist and functionalist interpretations of oral literature, stressing the non-static and amorphous nature of myth and oral literature and their relation to other aspects of social life. He has adopted the cognitive approach to analyzing myth and ritual from the actor's point of view in order to reflect creativity and imagination of human beings.
The essay on "Religion and ritual from Tylor to Parsons: the definitional problem" is to review and examine various approaches to the definition of religious and ritual phenomena. Professor Goody concludes that the sacred-profane dichotomy to differentiate religion from ritual has its explanatory powers by scholars but it is misleading from the actor's perception because ritual can be pragmatic, religious, and neither of both.
The essays on "Oral Literature", "Oral Creativity", "The folktale and cultural history" , and "Animals, human and gods in northern Ghana" introduce the variety of genres of oral literature with imaginative and fictional character such as epic, folktale, folk drama, myth, and legend and historical recitation in which changes can be constantly introduced in an interlocking chain by anonymous individuals. Based on his abundant fieldwork experience, the use of the audio recorder ("The anthropologist and the audio recorder") in participant observation can encapsulate the existence of variations of recitation in the same myth by different individuals ("The Bagre in all its variety").
According to Professor Goody, writing has opened up new spheres of communication but it does never diminish the importance of oral transmission (i.e. indigenous forms of socialization between parent and child) in the modern world ("Writing and oral memory: the importance of the lecto-oral"). People are still more verbal and written text is used to turn into oral communication nowadays.
This book can provide readers with provocative insights into studying transmission of knowledge and traditional culture and society. Professor Goody rejects the widely-held belief that transmission of knowledge in traditional society is as static as a "copy-cat" program which lacks reflexivity of thinking and creativity.
