About the Author
Shirley Samuels works with the American Studies program and the Feminist, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program at Cornell University. She has taught at Princeton, Brandeis and the University of Delaware. She has had fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies, the Huntington Library and the Library Company of Philadelphia. In addition to journal articles and chapters in books, she is author of Reading the American Novel: 1780-1865 (2012), Facing America: Iconography and the Civil War (2004) and Romances of the Republic: Women, the Family, and Violence in the Literature of the Early American Nation (1996). She is editor of the Companion to American Fiction, 1780-1865 (2004) and The Culture of Sentiment: Race, Gender, and Sentimentality in Nineteenth-Century America (1992).

Academics on Abraham

This is a collection of essays by current academic writers on Mr. Lincoln: most are superficial or wrongheaded or both. They generally are written in the muddied but seemingly intelligent prose favored by those who write for purposes of university publishing rather than informing the common reader. Many are framed in the politically correct views of the college campus.
Some examples: Wilson/ "... the 'all men were created equal' phrase was placed in the Declaration for future use, implying that the phrase was an ontologically proleptic political idiom.."; Sweet/ uses the word "topos" three times in one paragraph; Schnieder/"...I will argue that the only way not to show the hard side of Lincoln, the only way to produce the benevolent, all-loving, antiracist Lincoln who persists in fantasy if not scholarly histories, is to hide the Indian bodies."; and, Giles/ "Whereas [George W.] Bush was generally abhorred in Europe for bringing the good name of American liberty into disrepute, it is remarkable how Lincoln became sanctified as a folk hero, both at home and abroad, for the way he manipulated the power of his presidency to bring about the end of slavery."
I did find the contribution to this book by Professor Betsy Erkkila "Lincoln in International Memory" to be well written and informative.

This volume is excellent. The review above is written by a non-academic and so it is obviously skewed. this is a volume written by experts for those trying to become specialists, and there is some clumsy prose, but over all this is a really great place to get started with academic studies of Lincoln. In particular this volume is aimed at English professors, and much new material for their further studies.
