The Jews of Italy under Fascist and Nazi Rule, 1922-1945 brings to light the Italian-Jewish experience from the start of Mussolini's prime ministership through the end of the Second World War. Challenging the myth of Italian benevolence during the Fascist period, the authors investigate the treatment of Jews by Italians during the Holocaust, and the native versus foreign roots of Italian fascist anti-Semitism. Each essay in this volume each illustrates a different aspect of Italian Jewry under Fascist and Nazi rule. Areas of inquiry include the role of the Catholic Church with special reference to Pope Pius XII, Mussolini's attitude and anti-Jewish policies leading to the onset of the 1938 Italian racial laws, and the Italian popular reactions to anti-Jewish persecution. Included also is an examination of cover images and articles from the Italian racist newspaper La Difesa della Razza intended to lay bare the influence of the Italian media on the general Italian public.

About the Author
Joshua D. Zimmerman is associate professor of history and the Eli and Diana Zborowski Professorial Chair in Interdisciplinary Holocaust Studies at Yeshiva University in New York City. He is the author of Poles, Jews and the Politics of Nationality: the Bund and the Polish Socialist Party in Late Tsarist Russia, 1892-1914 (2004), and editor of Contested Memories: Poles and Jews during the Holocaust and its Aftermath (2003).

Important and timely

The relatively high survival rate among Italian Jews during WWII has led many historians to suggest that the Italians were reluctant or unwilling participants in Hitler's Final Solution, and that they consistently resisted or subverted the Germans' efforts to send Jews to the camps -- a view advanced in recent years by various apologists for Mussolini, not simply by Fini and the Alleanza Nazionale ecc. but by Berlusconi as well. But the scholarly and generally well-written essays in this book thoroughly document the policies and actions of the fascists, from the racial decrees of 1938 that reversed more than a century of social and economic integration to the more active collaboration in the Holocaust. An important and as it happens timely contribution to this subject.

Those bad Italians

From the outset, it seemed as though the editor, Joshua D. Zimmerman, really had an issue with people saying anything good about Italy - especially during the dark days of the Second World War. While the high survival rate of Italian Jews is, indeed, something that is overlooked in both scholarly circles and amongst the general public, Mr. Zimmerman had his own agenda in putting together this volume and he used this book for the purpose of fulfilling that agenda - which appears to be villifying Italy and Italians during that time. It got tiresome after a very short time.
But, agenda and all, I am looking forward to Mr. Zimmerman's volumes on the French collaboration with the Nazis during WWII (after all, Hitler *didn't* march through Rome, but he marched right under the Eiffel Tower in Paris) as well as how American Jews did not do nearly enough for their European cousins during the war (or is that politically incorrect to say?). - Donna Di Giacomo
