About the Author
Elhanan Yakira is currently Schulman Professor of Philosophy at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem and holds his doctorate from the Sorbonne in France. His publications include Nécessité, Contrainte et Choix - la métaphysique de la liberté chez Spinoza et Leibniz (1989), La causalité de Galilée ... Kant (1994), Shlomo Ben Ami: Quel avenir pour Israël? (with Jeffrey Barash and Yves-Charles Zarka, 2001) and Leibniz's Theory of the Rational (with E. Grosholz, 1998). He also translated Liebnitz's Discours de métaphysique et la correspondence avec Arnauld into Hebrew and edited Descartes' Meditations and other philosophical classics.

If you can read only one book on the subject, this must be the one

Some thirty years ago Noam Chomsky discovered a small group in Paris who much appealed to his own sense of resentment. They were the handful of energetic writers around the left-wing bookstore La Vieille Taupe (VT): Robert Faurisson, Pierre Guillaume, Serge Thion, and three or four hangers-on. The thesis of VT was straight-forward. 1) There was no such thing as a Holocaust; 2) the "Zionists" of the world (code for Jews) insist that there was, proving that they are liars; 3) the "Zionists" use this lie to blackmail the world into allowing the criminal state of Israel to exist; 4) the Palestinians are the primary victims of the Zionist-Jewish conspiracy.
Chomsky was enthusiastic when he encountered the VT. True, he allowed, there actually was a Holocaust, but no matter. The main thing, according to Chomsky, is that the VT was right about the Zionists and their criminal enterprise in the Middle East..
Since this great discovery by VT and the early support given to it by Chomsky, others have picked up the same theme, with but little variation. Some of these are highly placed in universities around the world, especially in Britain. Not a few of this group, worldwide, are Jewish. Some are in Israel, although most of the Israeli (post-Zionists) seem to have emigrated to Britain, the U.S., and Germany. None of the Israelis have (as yet) endorsed explicit Holocaust denial, but the rest of the articles of faith are all there.
If you can read only one book about this phenomenon, it must be this superb volume by Yakira. He has taken the trouble, which most would find distasteful, to study these "post-Zionist" writings in great detail. And he also explains the intellectual poverty, the bad faith, and the frequently ridiculous nature of all these "post Zionist" arguments. All this despite the fame surrounding some of these names, for instance Hannah Arendt and Tony Judt.
I wish that Yakira had offered some estimate of how many professional scholars embrace this noxious doctrine. My impression is that those who do are a very small group worldwide, perhaps a few dozen, but that they make up for the poverty of their numbers (and their logic) with their savvy for getting attention.

The Sho'ah and Zionism

The word "Holocaust" is problematical. It means "burnt offering" and implies divine justice. The Hebrew word Sho'ah ("catastrophe") is a more accurate description of what transpired. But since "Holocaust" has long been employed in English and other European languages, we're stuck with it.
Yakira, a secular left-wing Israeli philosophy professor, skillfully deconstructs (1) the bizarre and fascinating European Holocaust denial movement, (2) related leftist anti-Zionist attempts to trivialize the Jewish dimension of the Holocaust, and (3) Hannah Arendt's consequently tendentious "Eichmann in Jerusalem", which tended, perversely, to put the Holocaust victims, not Eichmann, on trial. He recounts his own chance encounters with leading Holocaust deniers in Paris in the 1980's.
The Jewish people, he says, have a right to national political expression through the Zionist state (how else?). He defends their right, as a national community, to remember and mourn the Jewish victims of the genocide and draw their own conclusions from it. He tells us that the Holocaust, although an important part of Israeli national memory, is not as central to the identity and behavior of modern Israelis, especially in their struggle with the Arabs, as claimed by the anti-Zionist crowd. And, although the Holocaust provided justification for the Jewish state, Zionism did not begin with the Holocaust.

Post-Anti-Zionism: A Tour De Force Critique of the Anti-Israel Opprobrium Community

By far the best book written on the vexed topic of the horrendous delegitimization campaign by anti-Zionist Israelis and others perversely antipathetic to the Jewish state. Yakira is a philosopher of the first-order whose mastery of complicated arguments is unmatched. But what makes the book really special is its moral clarity. This is a deep book worthy of rereading and extended meditation. Additionally, the English translation, masterfully done by Michael Swersky, is a delight to read. Anyone interested in the meaning of debates about the meaning of Israel and Zionism today has to read this book.
