About the Author
Michael L. Morgan is Chancellor's Professor of Philosophy and Jewish Studies, Emeritus, at Indiana University, Bloomington. He is the author of numerous books, most recently Discovering Levinas (Cambridge University Press, 2007) and Beyond Auschwitz (2002), which was a finalist in the category of Jewish Thought for the Koret Book Award. He has also edited several collections of essays and editions of Spinoza's writings and his articles have appeared in journals including the Review of Metaphysics, the Journal of Religion and the Journal of Jewish Thought and Philosophy.

INSPIRING

If this were possible, I would give this book six stars.
Levinas is not easy to understand. All the more so this book deserves praise for providing a comprehensive and reliable introduction to the original thinking of Levinas, while taking into account a variety of interpretations.
I could do without the strained effort by the author to include "animals as well as concern for the earth and its resources" within the scope of the norms postulated by Levinas (p. 63, fn. 15), while humanity ignores much more basic ethical imperatives. In short, according to Levinas, ethics is fundamental to human existence as paradigmatically expressed in face-to-face relationships, the "faces" of others imposing on each and every one of us an unconditional duty to help and take care of the needs of "others."
My own writings add imperatives, such as trying to understand the world and ourselves; facilitating and engaging in peak creativity; and, primarily, taking care of the future of the human species. However these and other values in no come instead of the basic duty imposed by Levinas, as based on religious and other traditions and sharpened and elaborated by him.
This fundamental ethics must be contrasted with human realities. Not only are the needy neglected in favor of "having a good time," but widely accepted views and practices put "happiness" and "self-realization," in mainly hedonistic meanings, at the center of human concerns. And, even worse, mass killings, as in Syria, go on with "realpolitik" receiving priority over compelling ethical commandments.
To conclude with a thought-experiment: if a cosmic court of justice would apply to humanity even a minimal measure of the morality rightly demanded by Levinas, sending the human species into a "purgatory" for a couple of generations would be a very lenient verdict.
This book is obligatory reading for all who are or should be worried about the moral situation of humanity, including all politicians.

This is a careful and accessible introduction to Levinas. The author makes clear where he has made choices about interpreting Levinas. And it really helps to penetrate Levinas difficult language and style. Recommended.
