Of the many TEFL methodology books in the Executive English Solutions library, this is one of my favorites!

One-to-one classes can be very challenging , especially when trying to follow a course book. Most course book activities are designed for groups rather than one-to-one and can be quite boring if not adapted properly. The book provides great ideas for adapting materials as well as fantastic ready made activities on the CDROM that are easy to put into action. Of the many TEFL methodology books in the Executive English Solutions library, this is one of my favorites!

A Comprehensive Manual for Giving Awesome Private Lessons

This book is fantastic. As of 2015, it provides relevant, accessible, and powerful teaching tools and strategies to utilize in private lessons and other one-to-one scenarios. The book includes many games and activities for promoting dialogue between you and your student and fostering a cultural exchange that heightens the language learning experience. There are also many role playing activities as well as activities designed to make the student a more autonomous learner (and even educator!). Even more valuable were the surveys and questionnaires included in the book--all of which are designed to objectively capture the students' interests, needs, goals, and learning style.The CD, with all of the downloadable worksheets, was worth far more than the asking price of the book, and you'll be getting quite a bargain for your purchase!

I absolutely LOVE this life-saver of a book and consider it an invaluable tool in my arsenal of tricks as an EFL instructor. Highly, HIGHLY recommended!

'Markedness' refers to the tendency of languages to show a preference for particular structures or sounds. This bias towards 'marked' elements is consistent within and across languages, and tells us a great deal about what languages can and cannot do. This pioneering study presents a groundbreaking theory of markedness in phonology. De Lacy argues that markedness is part of our linguistic competence, and is determined by three conflicting mechanisms in the brain: (a) pressure to preserve marked sounds ('preservation'), (b) pressure to turn marked sounds into unmarked sounds ('reduction'), and (c) a mechanism allowing the distinction between marked and unmarked sounds to be collapsed ('conflation'). He shows that due to these mechanisms, markedness occurs only when preservation is irrelevant. Drawing on examples of phenomena such as epenthesis, neutralisation, assimilation, vowel reduction and sonority-driven stress, Markedness offers an important insight into this essential concept in the understanding of human language.

About the Author
Paul A. Rahe holds a B.A. from Yale University, an M.A. in Litterae Humaniores from University of Oxford, and a Ph.D. in Ancient History from Yale University. He is the author, most recently, of Soft Despotism, Democracy's Drift: Montesquieu, Rousseau, and Tocqueville on the Modern Prospect (2009) and Montesquieu and the Logic of Liberty: War, Religion, Commerce, Climate, Terrain, Technology, Uneasiness of Mind, the Spirit of Political Vigilance, and the Foundations of the Modern Republic (2009). He has co-edited Montesquieu's Political Science: Essays on the Spirit of Laws and edited Machiavelli's Liberal Republican Legacy, and he has published a host of articles in journals and chapters in edited books. Professor Rahe is the Charles O. Lee and Louise K. Lee Chair in the Western Heritage and Professor of History and Political Science at Hillsdale College.

About the Author
Joanna M. Setchell is Senior Lecturer in Evolutionary Anthropology at Durham University, and Director of the MSc in Evolutionary Anthropology. Her research integrates behaviour, morphology and demographic studies with genetics and endocrinology to address questions relating to reproductive strategies, life history and sexual selection in primates.

Deborah J. Curtis is Honorary Research Associate in the Department of Anthropology and Geography at Oxford Brookes University. Her interests focus on lemur biology and she has conducted research on functional anatomy, behaviour and ecology, reproductive endocrinology, food chemistry, activity patterns and genetics. She also works as a scientific and medical translator.

making an academic topic somewhat more easy to tackle

This book is kind of unique, as there are no other books out there addressing birds or mammals and climate change. The authors team up to present a readable text. One author is a freelance science writer.

The text mentions numerous habitats and species. There are few tables, most of the data is in the text. Pictures are in two sections in the middle and toward the back. It's taken me about half a year to get through it. Illustrations might have helped, as you have to imagine all the habitats from films and personal experience. Few of us have been to the Antarctic and the arctic is unfamiliar to many.

It's a good effort. You can continue your study based on your local area and local bird maps and bird counts. The change will be apparent to all in 20 years.

It was delivered really fast and i always knew where it was because of the tracking system.

Activities in the book are attractive because it involves grammar with common situations in office, travel, home etc. Audio can be downloaded from the Cambridge website. This is the third book so you have to expect a B1 to B2 european frame for languages levels included. Writing skills practices are included in all units too. I think this combination of grammar, common situations and writing is innovative and you should buy it if you want to improve your convesational and writing American English skills.

About the Author
Lambert Zuidervaart is Professor of Philosophy at the Institute for Christian Studies, where he holds the Herman Dooyeweerd Chair in Social and Political Philosophy, and an Associate member of the Graduate Faculty in Philosophy at the University of Toronto. He is the former President of the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His most recent books with Cambridge University Press - Artistic Truth: Aesthetics, Discourse, and Imaginative Disclosure and Social Philosophy after Adorno - received Symposium Book Awards from the Canadian Society for Continental Philosophy in 2006 and 2008, respectively. His book Adorno's Aesthetic Theory (1991) was the first major study in English on Adorno's aesthetics.
