About the Author
Terry Gifford is an ecocritic and poet, the author of Ted Hughes (Routledge, 2009), Reconnecting With John Muir: Essays in Post-Pastoral Practice (University of Georgia Press, 2006), Pastoral (Routledge, 1999) and Green Voices: Understanding Contemporary Nature Poetry (Manchester University Press, 1995; second edition CCC Press, 2011), together with six chapters in books on Ted Hughes. His seventh collection of poems is (with Christopher North) Al Otro Lado del Aguilar (Oversteps Books, 2011). Author of The Joy of Climbing (Whittles, 2004), he is also a trustee of the UK's Mountain Heritage Trust.

Worth the wait -- and worth the read

If you have any Cambridge Companion to -- name the topic --,
then you know that these books are extremely useful to have around.
Most of them, however, you probably won't be tempted to read
straight through, like a novel...That is, unless you buy this one!
Hughes is one of the major British poets of the 20th century whose
literary reputation continues to grow after his death. This book
brings you fascinatingly up to date with the critical consensus
on the importance of his work, while not ignoring the controversies
of his life. I even enjoyed reading the essays that looked like they
might be a bit "dry" in style. The chapter on "Hughes and Feminism"
was especially well-done -- a long-deferred look at Hughes from a
"sympathetic" feminist perspective. And Jonathan Bate's "Hughes on
Shakespeare" was compelling enough to make me look forward to his
forthcoming biography of Hughes. This book is a must for anyone who
wants to appreciate Hughes's unique standing in modern British poetry.
