The texts are analysed in their manuscript and print contexts in order to show local responses and changing meanings. This important work opens up fresh texts, sources and approaches for understanding medieval anti-semitism and shows how anti-semitic stereotypes came to be such potent images which would endure far beyond the Middle Ages.

Brilliant! A crushing refutation of the idea that John was written for an isolated community

This is the best book of biblical scholarship I have read in a long time. Klink so thoroughly demolishes the idea of community that I cannot imagine how anyone could resuscitate the concept.

And what is so stunning about this is that just thirty years ago, in a survey of scholarship about John, Robert Kysar wrote that "'The gospel cannot be read meaningfully apart from some understanding of the community out of which and to which it was written'" (p 247). Recently, however, Kysar admitted the idea of an isolated community was seen as less and less likely.

And now, after Klink, 'Sitze im Leben' appears to be dead and buried.

Klink goes through all the evidence and points out all the usual flaws with the argument, noting the dangerous circularity of depending upon the text alone to explain the audience, the form critics who thought everything could be explained by understanding the genre, and the plain fact that the term 'community' "is one of the most elusive terms to define" (p 51).

Klink, in contrast, relies on plain facts. He goes through Martyn's research on Judaism and asks the obvious question: "Why, if Judaism could have been so organized and unified, according to Martyn, could not Christianity have had a similar recognition of identity?...The fact that Paul went to Jerusalem more than once...implies a wide recognition of the functional centrality of Christian leadership" (pp 60-61).

No kidding. It is striking that all the earliest Christian literature, from Paul's epistles to the epistles of Ignatius, involve one functioning group of Christians in contact with another group, and, usually, many groups. Against these plain facts the idea of isolated communities is untenable.

For far too long, the concept of Christianity as a sectarian movement has held sway, in spite of the gross oversimplifications associated with the concept. Klink picks through all the various research by Malina, Meeks, Troeltsch, Stark, and others, sifts the results, and concludes "community need not be defined territorially, but relationally...(and) The traditions of the Gospels' origens were meant to confirm that the Gospels were rooted in the apostles and in the antiquity of the church" (p 106).

Klink relies upon Richard Burridge and his famous book 'What are the Gospels' to point out that "rarely were bioi around the time of Gospels used specifically for a closed 'group'" (p 113).

Klink further asks if 'the implied reader is assumed to know the Beloved Disciple" (p 162). He goes through the evidence in the Lazarus narrative, the evidence given in John about the customs and geography, which he decides points away from the author having expected the reader to know much about Galilean geography, and, most of all, the implication that the reader must have had extensive background in the Old Testament. All of which argues against John being aimed at a local community since the reader's knowledge, as implied, is so uneven.

In short, Klink states "that the Gospels were written for an indefinite audience, not an individual 'church' or network of churches" (p 249)

After examining the spiritual benefits of personal silence as a form of protection against the perils of sinful discourse in early monastic thought, this work shows how the monks of the Abbey of Cluny (founded in 910 in Burgundy) were the first to employ a silent language of meaning-specific hand signs that allowed them to convey precise information without recourse to spoken words. Scott Bruce discusses the linguistic character of the Cluniac sign language, its central role in the training of novices, the precautions taken to prevent its abuse, and the widespread adoption of this custom in other abbeys throughout Europe, which resulted in the creation of regionally specific idioms of this silent language.

Silence is golden!

I have been studying sign language for quite a while now, especially after my sister began to lose her hearing and a young age, and this book has been so fascinating! I worked for the New York Renaissance Faire and my character was a stage combatant/translator and it was great to have this book to study where sign language originated from.

It's an interesting read and something neat to have in your back pocket for those "random information" moments.

About the Author
Aseem Prakash is Professor of Political Science and the Walker Family Professor for the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington. He is the founding, General Editor of the Cambridge University Press Series on Business and Public Policy and the co-editor of the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management. Professor Prakash's research examines core issues in the study of governance: how do institutions emerge, how they diffuse and get adopted, and how they impact outcomes. In doing so, he studies the complex relationship of businesses with governments and non-governmental organizations. His recent work focuses on the emergence, recruitment/diffusion, and efficacy of voluntary programs in the for-profit as well as the non-profit sectors. He is also examining issues pertaining to (1) NGO advocacy, (2) Corporate Responsibility, and (3) the influence of trade and FDI networks on the cross-country diffusion of rules, standards, and norms in areas such as the environment, human rights, labor rights, property rights and women's rights. Aseem Prakash is author of Greening the Firm: The Politics of Corporate Environmentalism (Cambridge, 2000), co-author of The Voluntary Environmentalists: Green Clubs, ISO 14001, and Voluntary Environmental Regulations (Cambridge, 2006) and co-editor of Voluntary Regulations of NGOs and Nonprofits: An Accountability Club Framework (Cambridge, 2010), Voluntary Programs: A Club Theory Perspective (2009), Coping with Globalization (2000), Responding to Globalization (2000) and Globalization and Governance (1999). Serves best as a review guide

I teach this class as a high school alternative to AP and the CIE website recommends this course book as a textbook. I can say without a doubt, this is not a textbook replacement. The book does a great job of hitting all the topics that are covered in the AICE syllabus but it simply cannot stand alone as a textbook. My main issue with this book is that it tends to gloss over the topics and doesn't go in too much depth. Students need more practice and examples than this book tends to give. As an educator, I can definitely recommend this book as a review before the exam or as a supplemental book. As a supplement, this book is great, as a replacement for a textbook, I don't recommend it. The CD that comes with this book provides great animations and supplemental problems students can work on. Do not expect a ton of work for students, but the few problems provided do a decent job as examples and review problems. If you are a student looking for a review book, I can recommend this book, but be forewarned that it is a lengthy book and does include both AS material and A material. If you are a teacher, plan to use this as an additional resource to teach the class and not as a replacement for a good textbook.

Mediocre at best

I had to use this textbook for my high school AS-level chemistry course, and while the textbook does provide a format that allows students to pass the exam, it lacks the depth for chemistry and the syllabus. The organic chapters are decent, but I believe more examples need to be provided for harder examples, especially with amines and cyanides. The book puts equations on the page,but does not really explain them and their significance. For example, the exam may ask for a reaction that was in the book, but you, as the student do not understand the significance. So it almost like you are craming in all of these equations, but are grasping the concepts behind them. I would suggest buying a new book coming out, by Hodder Education, probably in the fall of this year, or purchase the new edition of this textbook, which I believe comes out this summer. Definitely need a good teacher for this course, cannot self-study.

This book is designed for A levels, equivalent to AP Chemistry, but should be useful for students taking introductory Chemistry. The concepts are carefully explained and the exercises are very helpful to build confidence and understanding of the subject. Solutions are provided on the CD. Compared to a standard AP Chemistry or college Chemistry textbook, this book is a lot cheaper and does a better job teaching the basic ideas. It achieves this by doing away with the details that few college freshmen will ever learn or remember.
