About the Author
Villy Christensen is Associate Professor and Associate Director of the Fisheries Centre at the University of British Columbia. He is a leading expert in ecosystem modeling, and has led courses and workshops throughout the world on developing ecosystem approaches to fisheries management.
Jay Maclean is a former Acting Director General and Director of the Information Program of the International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management (ICLARM) in the Philippines. He is currently a consultant for several international organizations and is based in Manila.

Towards a Comprehensive Approach....

2011's "Ecosystem Approaches to Fisheries", edited by Villy Christiansen and Jay Maclean, brings together 20 essays on the challenges of ecosystem-based management of the world's fisheries. The authors each cite the pioneering work of Dr. Daniel Pauley, a ground-breaker in advocating for a comprehensive, data-based approach to fisheries management, in which the entire ecosystem, and not just individual commercially valuable species, are modeled and studied, and science-based recommendations articulated to policy-makers.
The essays capture the current state of play in a rapidly evolving field, made more urgent by the impact of industrial fishing methods and climate change on fish populations and habitats. While these short essays can only survey the field, they include lots of good information and food for thought, along with some cautions and a few strongly-worded opinions.
This reviewer was fascinated by Andrew Bakun's essay on the impact of oceanic oxygen content on fish populations, an overlooked but obvious constraint. Jeremy Jackson and Jennifer Jacquet reinforce Daniel Pauley's seminal observation on the shifting baselines of fish populations with a very readable and emotional essay. The concluding section, on the role of scientists in influencing the public debate, may be the most interesting portion of the book. Scientists who take sides in public debates can add to the discussion, but run the risk of being seen to lose their objectivity, especially in a field where the basic science content has changed so rapidly.
"Ecosystem Approaches to Fisheries" appears to be intended primarily for participants in the fisheries management debate; the general reader may find at least some of the essays to be laden with scientific jargon and difficult to understand.
