About the Author
Louise Shelley is a Professor in the School of Public Policy and the founder and Director of the Terrorism, Transnational Crime and Corruption Center (TraCCC) at George Mason University. She is a leading US expert on transnational crime and terrorism, with a particular focus on the former Soviet Union. Dr Shelley is the author of Policing Soviet Society (1996), Lawyers in Soviet Work Life (1984) and Crime and Modernization (1981), as well as numerous articles and book chapters on all aspects of transnational crime, corruption and the crime-terror nexus.

Informative and Captivating

I have just finished reading (and admittedly, rereading) this extraordinarily insightful work. The innovative and logical organization of this book, the precise methods of its analysis, the breadth and depth of the collected research, and the overall detail in each chapter, embodies, and I say this without the intention of meaningless flattery, the most informative and useful piece written to date on global trafficking in persons.
As a current Peace Corps Volunteer at a women's crisis center involved in combating human trafficking, and as a soon to be graduate student planning to make the focus of my research - and my future career - on human trafficking, I thank Professor Shelly for her enormous intellectual contribution to the subject. The sheer amount of data she presents in combination with profound attention to regional differences captures the immense but achievable challenge ahead of all those involved in the pervasive crime's eradication. More so than any other counter-trafficking work I have come across, this book is an encyclopedia of identifiable and executable next-steps in which all actors combating the crime can participate.
I found the analysis in Part II of the "financial side of human trafficking" to be particularly illuminating. Professor Shelly's background and expertise in transnational crime provides intelligent perspective in pinpointing and attacking critical economic elements of the rapidly growing global business. Additionally, the six business models she details and the stark and important differences identified between each, create a palpable framework of understanding while at the same time identify key avenues for further individual and comparative research. Furthermore, I really appreciate the intersects that she exposes in Part II, and throughout the book, between licit and illicit economies and legal and illegal entities. These crossovers highlight essential points of intervention that can and should be capitalized on by all actors involved in counter-trafficking efforts whenever and wherever they exist; from law enforcement and scholarly investigations, to corporate and small business accountability initiatives.

Solid, Reliable Introduction to the Subject

Clearly written, well-organized, thorough overview of human trafficking as a global phenomenon. The book is accessible, very good for undergraduate course adoption, and offers important theoretical, conceptual, and empirical arguments. I chose 3, rather than 4, stars for one reason: the book tends to be repetitive. On the one hand, I appreciate the way each chapter is structured like the others, so that discussions of trafficking in, say, the Near and Middle East can be readily compared to discussions of South Asia or the Americas. However, my experience is that students tend to find the repetition bothersome. The regional case studies are very important, and I'm especially glad that the USA and Europe are included -- trafficking all-too-often gets dismissed as a problem of "over there."

Some Very Important Information, but Writing and Organization Are Poor

The first one hundred pages provide very good insight, analysis, and statistics regarding both the victims and perpetrators of human trafficking. However, the book is incredibly redundant - very little new information is presented after the first third of the book. Furthermore, nearly every paragraph ended with a citation, and this began to feel incredibly excessive after awhile.
All in all, this is a good introductory read on global human trafficking, but at the same time, embodies all that is wrong with academic writing. Entire chapters felt like filler - as a reader, I kept thinking, "This is the third time that I have read this exact statistic in this book." Too often, Shelley reverts to saying, "as stated in chapter four..." and then proceeding to regurgitate information.
