The Importance of Being Innocent: Why We Worry About Children (Australian Encounters), by Joanne Faulkner

The Importance of Being Innocent addresses the current debate in Australia and internationally regarding the sexualisation of children, predation on them by pedophiles and the risks apparently posed to their 'innate innocence' by perceived problems and threats in contemporary society. Joanne Faulkner argues that, contrary to popular opinion, social issues have been sensationally expounded in moral panics about children who are often presented as alternatively obese, binge-drinking and drug-using, self-harming, neglected, abused, medicated and driven to anti-social behavior by TV and computers. This erudite and thought-provoking book instead suggests that modern western society has reacted to problems plaguing the adult world by fetishizing children as innocents, who must be protected from social realities. Taking a philosophical and sociological perspective, it outlines the various historical trends, emotional investments and social tensions that shape contemporary ideas about what childhood represents, and our responsibilities in regard to children.

A strong case underplayed
By Tony Smith
As a fellow Australian, Faulkner's chosen examples are most familiar and the case she makes one I would endorse a thousand percent, yet I was left disappointed that there was a lot more that could and should have been said had she taken on board some broader perspectives. Judith Rich Harris's The Nurture Assumption: Why Children Turn Out the Way They Do, Revised and Updated and Lenore Skenazy's Free-Range Kids, How to Raise Safe, Self-Reliant Children (Without Going Nuts with Worry) present overwhelming, if very different kinds of, evidence which can only strengthen Faulkner's position. Yes, they have both been greeted by loud hostility, but those same blind critics will have exactly the same problem with Faulkner. Maybe less surprising, as an avowed feminist, Faulkner spends no time on substantiated gender differences and so also misses the point that much of the nonsense about childhood innocence has been grounded in homophobic hostility to common explorations of teen/tween boys.

My other slight dissatisfaction was that The Importance of Being Innocent in places reads more like an overgrown academic paper than a book for a general audience as Faulkner falls into the philosophers' trap of pursuing narrow points disproportionately, especially her use of the controversy over Henson's Untitled #30 which may have been more understandable if she had openly brought her own interest in photography into play.

Those quibbles aside, the book makes an important argument. As publisher myself of a stolen generation autobiography, the ongoing "intervention" seriously rankles. Yet despite minister Macklin accepting my point that we have more to learn from them than they have from us, she appears too weak to resist the return of rampant paternalism which makes childhood innocence its new false god. Childhood is for growing through playing.
