Excellent coverage of important issues

This book is the product of an important conference held to debate current legal and ethical issues in art repatriation/restitution. All of the authors are at the forefront of their fields and present clear and readable overviews of the legality of the cases. Both sides are represented (for instance, for and against the repatriation of the Elgin Marbles). An excellent and interesting read; a necessity for people working in this area.

About the Author
Susan Long is Professor of Creative and Sustainable Organizations at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University, Australia. She is editor of "Socio-Analysis" and a Board member and past President of the International Society for the Psychoanalytic Study of Organizations.

Susan Long supervises research students and conducts organisational research at a variety of universities including INSEAD in Singapore, MEICAT, University of Melbourne, University of Divinity in Melbourne and Crossfields. As an organisational consultant in private practice she works with organisational change, executive coaching, board development, role analysis, team development and management training. She originally trained as a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist. Her experience of working with people as individuals and in groups and organisations gives her a broad perspective on management practices.Susan's capacity as a teacher and organizational consultant/ researcher has led her to be invited onto the boards of prestigious organizations and elected onto the committees of professional bodies. She is a member of the Board of the Judicial College of Victoria and of Comcare's advisory board for the Center of Excellence for Research into Mental Health at Work. She was the founding President of Group Relations Australia and a past president of the International Society for the Psychoanalytic Study of Organisations. Her participative action research has attracted grants through the Australian research Council and industry. She has published six books and many journal articles.

Ronald Polansky is Professor of Philosophy and Chair of the Department of Philosophy at Duquesne University. He has been editor of the journal Ancient Philosophy since its beginning in 1980. Herbert Kitschelt is the George V. Allen Professor of International Relations in Duke University's Political Science Department. He has published widely on comparative political parties and party systems in Western Europe and postcommunist Eastern Europe and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Kirk Hawkins is Assistant Professor of Political Science at Brigham Young University. He is the author of The Discourse of Populism: Venezuela's Chavismo in Comparative Perspective (Cambridge University Press). He has published work on political parties and populist movements and his current research focuses on the analysis of political culture.

Juan Pablo Luna is Associate Professor of Political Science at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. His dissertation on party voter linkages in Chile and Uruguay won the 2008 Juan Linz Best Dissertation Award of APSA's Comparative Democratization Section.

Guillermo Rosas is Assistant Professor of Political Science at Washington University in St. Louis. He is the author of Curbing Bailouts: Banking Crises and Electoral Accountability in Comparative Perspective (University of Michigan Press). His research interests center on political economy and legislative politics.

Elizabeth Zechmeister is Assistant Professor of Political Science and Assistant Director of the Latin American Public Opinion Project at Vanderbilt University. She is the author, with Jennifer Merolla, of Democracy at Risk: How Terrorist Threats Affect the Public (University of Chicago Press). Her research interests are in comparative political behavior with a regional focus on Latin America.

About the Author
Jason Scott Smith is an Assistant Professor of History at the University of New Mexico. He previously held a Mellon Fellowship in American Studies at Cornell University, where he was a visiting assistant professor in the Department of History and the Department of Government. In 2001-2 he was the Harvard Newcomen Fellow at the Harvard Business School, where he taught courses on the history of capitalism. His work has appeared in a number of journals, including the Journal of Social History, Pacific Historical Review, Reviews in American History, and the Journal of Interdisciplinary History.

An Exceptional Study of the Origins of the Modern Liberal American State

I found this book an engaging, important work that makes an important historiographical argument about the role of public works in creating the modern American middle class and making it possible for the United States to emerge as the superpower that it became after World War II. For more than thirty years there has been an assault on the history and policy of liberal ideology in the United States. In the process, many have reappraised and castigated the New Deal and Great Society programs as failures of American politics. The author of this important study offers a strikingly different, and constructive, perspective on the New Deal. By undertaking a close investigation of the place of New Deal programs in the development of modern America--using a remarkable range of sources--the author demonstrates how state-sponsored social and economic policies prompted a positive transformation of the United States.

This narrative marches surefootedly through the sometimes confusing administrative and policy events of the New Deal. It proves what many have long suspected, that infrastructure improvements decisively re-shaped the U.S. in the postwar era - they are the New Deal gift that keeps on giving. Smith looks to the evidence of the ND in both its rhetoric and its deeds, and supplies a welcome corrective to those historians who question the efficacy and impact of the New Deal. Bravo.

About the Author
Lee Ann Banaszak is currently associate professor of political science and women's studies at the Pennsylvania State University. She is the author of Why Movements Succeed or Fail: Opportunity, Culture and the Struggle for Woman Suffrage (1996) and the editor of Women's Movements Facing the Reconfigured State (Cambridge, 2003, with Karen Beckwith and Dieter Rucht) and The U.S. Women's Movement in Global Perspective (2005). Her articles have appeared in journals including the American Political Science Review, Public Opinion Quarterly, Political Research Quarterly, Politics & Gender, and Electoral Studies.

About the Author
Kevin Noble Maillard is an Associate Professor of Law at Syracuse University where he teaches family law, trusts and estates and on the subjects of children and the law, adoption, and popular culture and the law. He has written about and lectured on nontraditional families, racial intermixture, the role of marriage in America, civil liberties within the family, and popular culture and the law. His work has been published in the New York Times, Cardozo Law Review, SMU Law Review, Fordham Law Review and Law and Inequality. He is a frequent presenter at legal and interdisciplinary conferences.

Rose Cuison Villazor is an Associate Professor of Law at Hofstra Law School. She teaches and writes in the areas of race, citizenship, property and immigration law. Her articles have appeared in the New York University Law Review, California Law Review, Washington University Law Review and Southern California Law Review. In 2011, she received the AALS Minority Section Derrick A. Bell, Jr Award, which is given to a junior faculty member who, through activism, mentoring, teaching and scholarship, has made an extraordinary contribution to legal education, the legal system or social justice.
