In 1209 Simon of Montfort led a war against the Cathars of Languedoc after Pope Innocent III preached a crusade condemning them as heretics. The suppression of heresy became a pretext for a vicious war that remains largely unstudied as a military conflict. Laurence Marvin here examines the Albigensian Crusade as military and political history rather than religious history and traces these dimensions of the conflict through to Montfort's death in 1218. He shows how Montfort experienced military success in spite of a hostile populace, impossible military targets, armies that dissolved every forty days, and a pope who often failed to support the crusade morally or financially. He also discusses the supposed brutality of the war, why the inhabitants were for so long unsuccessful at defending themselves against it, and its impact on Occitania. This original account will appeal to scholars of medieval France, the Crusades and medieval military history.

"Marvin's book is a most welcome addition to crusade scholarship."
Rebecca Rist, Journal of Military History
"It is a useful, highly readable and informative study that will no doubt find an important place on the bookshelves of scholars of the Albigensian crusade and provoke further debate about the use of sources in the study of the conflict."
Chris Jones, The Medieval Review
"This highly accessible work is a benchmark for the writing of military and political history on the regional level...The great achievement of this text is to interweave military history into the broader patterns of medieval society in which wars were fought...all future discussions of the Albigensian crusade will have to begin with this study."
David Bachrach, H-France
"...a worthy contribution to scholarship."
Mark Gregory Pegg, Speculum
"...an essential addition to the growing field of scholarship on medieval Occitania and military history during this period."
Natasha Hodgson, Canadian Journal of History
"[Marvin's] description of the battle of Muret in 1213 is exemplary in its precision. His estimation, description, and praise of the martial skill of Simon de Monfort are reliable and learned ... Marvin's clarity of purpose and candid perspective make The Occitan War a worthy contribution to scholarship."

Valuable, but not an Introduction
By S. Smith
The Albigensian Crusade has generated a large literature of academic and popular history, pseudo-history and myth, and features in many general works on crusading or on the Cathars. The rationale for Laurence Marvin's book is that most of these works cover a period of a century or more, starting with the growth of heresy and ending with its virtual elimination by the Inquisition and devote a lot of space to Cathar beliefs: Marvin concentrates solely on the military campaigns and related political manoeuvrings in the period 1209 to 1218. He does what he sets out to do.
The strength of this book is it gives a detailed narrative of the military campaigns and analyses the reasons why the Northern and Occitan leaders decided on their strategies. Marvin argues that the initial crusading impetus soon transformed into Simon de Montfort's own war to create a feudal state similar to those in northern France in the south, and to extend his dominions by attacking southern lords not condemned for heresy. After the first few years, the Northerners were less concerned with eliminating heresy than crushing Occitan opposition. This is in marked contrast to Mark Pegg's "A Most Holy War", which typifies the Albigensian Crusade as religious-inspired genocide. The case made by Laurence Marvin is much more convincing.
The book however relies on relatively few primary sources and, although he describes the many sieges and few battles in detail, Jonathan Sumption in "The Albigensian Crusade" deals with the same more economically by giving less detail, while giving more context and being more elegantly written. If you want a good introduction to the subject, I would suggest reading Sumption first, then Marvin for additional detail and finally Pegg for a contrary view.

Details on the actual crusade
By Rutger Wimmenhove
This book skillfully fills the gap of information that most books about the Albigensian Crusade leave you with. Said gap exists because in modern culture, the very term Albigensian Crusade has oddly come to include the entire period of the inquisition, which is a period much too large to focus on too much of any details, and most books that try to only describe events postdating the actual crusade. Often, the most heavy military crusade period itself is only vaguely described. This book is refreshingly the complete opposite. In and of itself, is is an impressive work on warfare considering combat strategies and engineering in high medieval times, but it greatly adds a vast amount of knowledge on how the political borders of the lands in Occitania changed during this time, too. It is objective and describes chronologically in great detail how the Albigensian crusade came about, and exactly where, when and how sieges and all sorts of vicious guerilla combat took place in the historical regions of Occitania.

Military and Political Analysis of Christianon Christian Crusade
By Eleanor Anderson-Miles
The Occitan War: A Military and Political History of the Albigensian Crusade, 1209-1218, focuses entirely on the actual, factual aspects of how Pope Innocednt III and the Northern French used heresy as an excuse to wage war on Christians in the southern part of France. The book relies on contemporary documents, with careful clarification of who says what. Before delving into nuances of the different ways the Cathars worshipped from the Catholic (and dogmatic) approach to Christianity, this book is essential for creating the foundation of what actually happened. A useful, if unhappy telling, source for understanding this first phase of the Albigensian Crusade. Laters developments in the Crusade encompassed Inquisitions. A sorry revelation of how people insist that other believe and abehave as they do.
