John McCleary is Professor of Mathematics at Vassar College on the Elizabeth Stillman Williams Chair. His research interests lie at the boundary between geometry and topology, especially where algebraic topology plays a role. His papers on topology have appeared in Inventiones Mathematicae, the American Journal of Mathematics and other journals, and he has written expository papers that have appeared in American Mathematical Monthly. He is also interested in the history of mathematics, especially the history of geometry in the nineteenth century and of topology in the twentieth century. He is the author of A User's Guide to Spectral Sequences and A First Course in Topology: Continuity and Dimension, and he has edited proceedings in topology and in history, as well as a volume of the collected works of John Milnor. He has been a visitor to the mathematics institutes in Goettingen, Strasbourg and Cambridge, and to MSRI in Berkeley.

About the Author
Jay W. Baird is Professor of History Emeritus at Miami University in Ohio. He has also taught at Stanford University and Pomona College, and was a visiting fellow at the University of Cambridge in 1997 and 2004. His previous books include To Die For Germany (1990); The Mythical World of Nazi War Propaganda, 1939-1945 (1977); and the edited volume From Nuremberg to My Lai (1974). He served as president of the German Studies Association from 1993-1995, and was recognized by the Holocaust Educational Foundation for distinguished contributions to Holocaust education in 2006.

About the Author
Lawrence S. Meyers is Professor of Psychology at Sacramento State University. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in research design, data analysis, data interpretation, testing and measurement, and history and systems of psychology. He was coauthor of a textbook on research methods in the 1970s, has recently coauthored books on multivariate research design and analysis of variance, and has more than three dozen publications; some of his relatively recent work has been in areas such as measurement and testing and positive psychology. He received his doctorate from Adelphi University and worked on a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Texas, Austin, and Purdue University.

Glenn Gamst is Professor and Chair of the Psychology Department at the University of La Verne, where he teaches the doctoral advanced statistics sequence. He received his PhD from the University of Arkansas in experimental psychology. His research interests include the effects of multicultural variables such as client-therapist ethnic match, client acculturation status and ethnic identity, and therapist cultural competence on clinical outcomes. Additional research interests focus on conversation memory and discourse processing.

A. J. Guarino is on the faculty at Alabama State University where he teaches graduate statistics courses in the Psychology department. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and earned a doctorate in statistics and research methodologies from the University of Southern California through the Department of Educational Psychology.

About the Author
Harry Mallgrave is Associate Professor of History and Theory at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. His 1996 book Gottfried Semper: Architect of the Nineteenth Century was awarded the Alice Davis Hitchcock Award by the Society of Architectural Historians.

The New Gold Standard

Mallgrave has integrated and consolidated an enormous body of literature, thought and imagery on the emergence of "modern" architectural theory.

If you want to know WHY our cities and buildings look the way they do, it is because architects explored their intentions in theoretical exercises. Mallgrave offers the most compelling depiction of the changing fortunes of these intentions in this magisterial survey.

The scope and sweep of his effort is breathtaking, and the story is FINALLY being told without the pedantic hectoring of advocate-historians like Pevsner and Geidion and their minions.

Mallgrave's insight and wit are in evidence upon each an every page. This is an epochal study and worthy of a major academic award.

Mallgrave has written the first comprehensive treatment on a subject that has been explored without much nuance for nearly a century and a half. He deserves our unending gratitude.

This book seemed more in depth than any book I've seen on Banach algebras. It went into history and seemed to mention something about every topic - if not giving details, then giving references.

This second edition of Daniel W. Stroock's text is suitable for first-year graduate students with a good grasp of introductory, undergraduate probability theory and a sound grounding in analysis. It is intended to provide readers with an introduction to probability theory and the analytic ideas and tools on which the modern theory relies. It includes more than 750 exercises. Much of the content has undergone significant revision. In particular, the treatment of Levy processes has been rewritten, and a detailed account of Gaussian measures on a Banach space is given. The first part of the book deals with independent random variables, Central Limit phenomena, and the construction of Levy processes, including Brownian motion. Conditioning is developed and applied to discrete parameter martingales in Chapter 5, Chapter 6 contains the ergodic theorem and Burkholder's inequality, and continuous parameter martingales are discussed in Chapter 7. Chapter 8 is devoted to Gaussian measures on a Banach space, where they are treated from the abstract Wiener space perspective. The abstract theory of weak convergence is developed in Chapter 9, which ends with a proof of Donsker's Invariance Principle. The concluding two chapters contain applications of Brownian motion to the analysis of partial differential equations and potential theory.

Dr Daniel W. Stroock is the Simons Professor of Mathematics Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has published numerous articles and is the author of six books, most recently Partial Differential Equations for Probabilists (2008).
