About the Author
Ton Hoenselaars is Professor of Early Modern English Literature and Culture at Utrecht University, where he teaches Renaissance drama in its historical contexts and in later adaptations both in Britain and abroad. His research concentrates on early modern English literature (with a special focus on Shakespeare) and its international relations. He has published widely on images of nations in Renaissance literature, literature in translation and on Shakespeare in European culture from 1600 to the present day. He is the author of Images of Englishmen and Foreigners in the Drama of Shakespeare and his Contemporaries (1992), and co-editor of a number of collections, including Shakespeare's Italy (1993), The Italian World of English Renaissance Drama (1998), The Author as Character (1999), 400 Years of Shakespeare in Europe (2003), Shakespeare and the Language of Translation (2004), Shakespeare's History Plays (2004) and Challenging Humanism (2005).

About the Author
James Mahoney is a Professor of Political Science and sociology at Northwestern University. He is the author of The Legacies of Liberalism: Path Dependence and Political Regimes in Central America (2001), which received the Barrington Moore Jr. Prize of the Comparative and Historical Section of the American Sociological Association. He is also coeditor of Comparative Historical Analysis in the Social Sciences (Cambridge, 2003), which received the Giovanni Sartori Book Award of the Qualitative Methods Section of the American Political Science Association. His most recent book is Colonialism and Postcolonial Development: Spanish America in Comparative Perspective (Cambridge, 2010).

Kathleen Thelen is Ford Professor of Political Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She also holds appointments at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Germany and at Oxford University, and she is an elected member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. She is the author, most recently, of How Institutions Evolve (Cambridge University Press, 2004), co-winner of the Woodrow Wilson Foundation Award of the American Political Science Association, and winner of the Mattei Dogan Award of the Society for Comparative Research. She has served as Chair of the Council for European Studies (Columbia University), as President of the Politics and History Section of the American Political Science Association, and as President of the Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics.

Very nice collection of essays

This book continues Thelen's campaign to work on the origins of institutional change. She and her co-authors should be congratulated for their dogged attention to a difficult problem, even if their conclusions remain somewhat inconclusive. Substantively these are very good examples of historical comparative analysis, especially the chapter by Sheingate.
A useful book for graduate classes in comparative political economy and/or historical institutionalize theory.

lovely translation of THE encyclopedia!

For a thousand years, this book by Isidore of Seville quite simple was THE reference book for any educated person. Having this in English translation was treasure enough, but now to see it in an affordable paperback is even more thrilling! An excellent read, absolutely vital for understanding what a medieval thinker may have thought about just about any given subject.

To second the previous reviewer, this is a great little translation of Isidore of Seville's Etymologies at a reasonable price. There are editions of Isidore that give more commentary (the ongoing Belles Lettres edition in particular), but this translation is a gem, providing Isidore's entire work with a scholarly translation. Furthermore, the translation helpfully gives Latin equivalents for the terms Isidore is defining or etymologizing, and is furnished with several helpful indices (a General Index, an Index of Greek Words, and an Index of Sources).

About the Author
John W. Patty is Associate Professor of Political Science at Washington University, St Louis. His research focuses on mathematical models of political institutions. His work has been published in various journals, including the American Journal of Political Science, Games and Economic Behavior, the Journal of Politics, the Journal of Theoretical Politics, the Quarterly Journal of Political Science, and Social Choice and Welfare. He also co-authored Learning While Governing (2013) with Sean Gailmard, which won the William H. Riker Prize awarded by the Political Economy Section of the American Political Science Association for the best book published on political economy.

Elizabeth Maggie Penn is Associate Professor of Political Science at Washington University, St Louis. A formal political theorist whose work focuses on social choice theory and political institutions, her work has been published in the American Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Politics, the Journal of Theoretical Politics, Mathematical and Computer Modelling, Public Choice, Social Choice and Welfare, and Complexity.

Great overview

“Warfare in African History” is a short historical overview that covers a variety of factors as they apply to how wars have been fought in Africa from antiquity to the modern day. The book focuses on the environment, economy, and politics; arms in antiquity; the military foundations of the state and society circa 1600; destruction and construction from circa 1600 to 1800; military revolution in the 1800s; the modern era.

Basically Reid argues that African have their own unique “way of war” because of their environment, society, and politics. Although outsiders, primarily the colonial powers, impacted Africa, the basics of how and why Africans fight wars are little changed over the centuries to the modern day.

The book’s only weakness, which is no fault of the author, is that due to the lack of native written documents the author must rely on archeology and the written accounts of outsiders for how Africans fought their wars in antiquity and the middle ages. Despite this limitation Reid builds a coherent perspective on how and why wars were fought as Arabs and Europeans pushed farther into Africa.

My only (minor) quibble with the book is it lumps northern Africa into sub-Saharan Africa when, for all practical purposes, northern Africa, culturally and from a war-making standpoint has more in common with the Islamic middle east.

All-in-all the book is worth a read if you have any interest in African warfare beyond the normal focus on the colonial period.

Excellent Survey

This is a very fine survey of the history of warfare in Africa, organized (as the title implies) around a thesis about how warfare has affected African history. You can read it as a pure survey, or follow the thesis; the one's informative, the other thought-provoking. The author does not pull punches about motives of anyone involved (slavery, imperialism, meliorism, nationalism, opportunism) but doesn't stray from his subject. Highly recommended for students of military history who know little about what went on in Africa from the rise of Islam to the Boer Wars.

(Looking forward to reading Higham's similar (I hope) survey on military history of China - wish there were a similar volume for South America.)

African Military History Survey

A short scholarly survey. Several excellent maps of African polities in different eras. Other maps show vegetation zones, physical topography, and, interestingly, the tsetse fly zone.

The periphery of African states tended to revolt against the center, once that center could no longer exert control. African military tradition long pre-dated contact with Arabs and Europeans. Very good on the influence of firearms (often exaggerated), the Arab and Atlantic slave trade, terrain, and disease.

Good on the desire some states had for mounted cavalry, but the tsetse fly zone made that a challenge.

Good exposition on how the 19th century African military revolution (the best known example being the Zulu impi) actually played into the better-armed hands of European colonial armies.

Military history tends to be Euro-centric, so this is a welcome volume covering some little-known territory.

She has published forty academic articles and book chapters on the origins of food production, the development of agricultural economies through the Bronze Age and Southern Arabian prehistory. She currently leads the Ancient Human Social Dynamics in Arabia Project in Oman.

Excellent review of Middle Eastern patterns of pilgrimage/household stability

This book is a comprehensive and insightful analysis of an important but often neglected topic in studies of Middle-Eastern cultures: specifically, the persistence over many millennia of traditions of household organization and functions ("habitus") and pilgrimages in the Arabian Peninsula and adjacent areas.

The author analyzes pilgrimage as it has been practiced during the Muslim era, but also in much earlier times and forms. She defines pilgrimage as "...a journey to a sacred place to participate in a system of sacred beliefs" (p. 19). Prof. McCorriston argues that archaeology and the social sciences have been so narrowly focused on cultural change, that they have not given sufficient attention to stability and continuity in ancient cultures. In considering this issue she addresses fundamental questions about the explanation and understanding of the past in general.

Prof. McCorriston's prose is clear and a pleasure to read, and the book is a model of organization. Her analytical approach is primarily based on post-structuralist concepts and postmodernism in general. This approach, which was derived mainly from contemporary European philosophers, is beginning to have increasing impact on American archaeology. She considers, for example, forms of household activities and pilgrimages to be "Ethnoepochal Meta-Structures." She compares the meta-structures of Arabia and Mesopotamian. The origins and developmen of this epistemological perspective derives from such post-structuralists as Braudel, Bourdieu, Hodder, Giddens, Tilly, et al. Some archaeologists reject this form of interpretation of the archaeological record. Nonetheless, they too will find much of value in this work. The author has carefully researched the physical evidence of thousands of years of pilgrimage in the Middle East and illustrated these data with informative graphs, photographs, drawings and tables. This book should also attract non-academic readers interested in Middle Eastern cultures in general. She enlivens her complex theoretical discussions with anecdotes from her fieldwork and personal interactions with the contemporary Arabians she encountered.

Prof. McCorriston reviews and rejects most previous attempts (e.g., Turner) to explain pilgrimage practices in terms of the functions pilgrimages play in various societies. She discusses in detail, however, the economic activities that are often associated with pilgrimages. Some scholars have argued that interactions between nomadic pastoralists and settled agriculturalists played an important role in initiating the evolution of ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia (Robert McC. Adams), China (Owen Lattimore), and elsewhere. Other functional arguments have related pilgrimage to the benefits of reinforcing the bonds between the individual and his or her larger social and political culture. Evolutionary biologists (e.g., Lewontin) have described the many pitfalls of trying to identify the focus of selection in explaining the physical features and behaviours of our distant ancestors in terms of what "need" was met by the selection for this or that trait. Explaining pilgrimage practices in functional terms involves the same problem. Pilgrimage practices appear to have originated early in human history, long before agriculture and cities appeared, and they continue in most of today's world. To explain and understand this phenomenon's origins (prehistoric gatherings for mate and materials exchange?), however, we have only meager archaeological evidence and arguments based on analogies. We do not know with any precision, for example, if ancient Middle Eastern pilgrimage patterns varied over time in concert with changes in the larger polities in Mesopotamia. But the author has made good use of what little evidence we do have,to try to explain these cultural continuities and traditions.

The author's conception of "Explaining Continuity" (p. 8-10) is an elegant essay. Like most post-structuralists, the author ascribes an independent causal role to ideological elements (cf. Marx) in cultural adaptation and change, while accepting the loose limitations that ecology and historical context places on cultural change. She argues that "...orientation toward meta-structure and long-term continuities supplies a new focus on periods and cultural histories ill-served by the social sciences" (p.234). The "Conclusions" chapter of this book neatly summarizes the problem of connecting meta-structures to the archaeological record. Although Prof. McCorriston's theoretical orientation differs from the positivism and empiricism associated with traditional American archaeology, she provides a lot of "hard" data relevant to her analysis.

This book is far more readable and informative than any book I've read that takes a similar theoretical position. Prof. McCorriston has written a book that should be read by every archaeologists, even those whose geographical focus is different from hers. It is an important contribution to current discussions of archaeological epistemologies.

Excellent and concise resource for med students and interns

Unfortunately, I did not read this book until I had completed two years as an attending on inpatient. It has a wonderfully concise and perfectly targeted description of approaches to inpatient psychiatric patient care. I particularly like the historical reflections in the introduction and think that this should be in the awareness of all new psychiatrists. The chapters are then broken out by categories of patients: schizophrenia, depression, mania, borderline personality, dementia, traumatic brain injury, dual diagnosis, young adults, and a final chapter on documentation. The authors managed to include many things that I don't ever remember being told but only figured out after months and years of trial and error. They have broad descriptions of approach as well as specific lists of medications and doses used for patients with agitation. I wish I had this in my intern year and know that in July many interns are looking for which guide does the best job. Amazingly, this is also a fairly easy read and I just popped out three chapters after a full day of work. It would be the perfect book to have available for some quick reading during downtime on a call night. Even at the delirious hours of 2-4am, you could probably get through a chapter or half a chapter and have the book done in your first 2-4 weeks. (The most limiting factor seems to be the price. If this were in the $20-30 range I would buy a bunch and have them shipped to my old residency. But $50 is steep even when you aren't coming out of four years of accumulating debt, which exactly when this type of book would be most useful. By the time I could afford to drop this much on a book, I had already done several years of inpatient work, so I imagine the target audience is getting lost to the price. I think the authors/publishers might have more success with a more appropriately targeted price. Students or residents may consider pitching in to share among 2 or 3 because it really is a good read.) Good luck interns!

This exploration of cultural 'dependency' in a unique, cosmopolitan, fin-de-siecle urban culture will also interest those concerned with the broader questions of culture and colonialism during the high tide of European imperialism.

About the Author
Maxwell T. Boykoff is an Assistant Professor in the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences Center for Science and Technology Policy Research at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He teaches in the Environmental Studies program and is Adjunct Faculty in the Geography department. In addition, he is a Senior Visiting Research Associate in the Environmental Change Institute at the University of Oxford. Max has ongoing interests in climate adaptation, cultural politics and environmental governance, science-policy interactions, and political economy and the environment. His research has been mentioned in a range of outlets such as Science, Nature, the Guardian, the New York Times, the Columbia Journalism Review, the Los Angeles Times, Christian Science Monitor, Grist, Utne Reader, La Rázon (Spain) and National Public Radio (US).
