Cristina Mazzoni is Professor of Romance Languages at the University of Vermont. In addition to numerous articles in scholarly journals, she is the author of Saint Hysteria, Maternal Impressions, The Voices of Gemma Galgani (with Rudolph Bell), and The Women in God's Kitchen.

The author goes into incredible, some might say exhaustive, depth in her analysis of this national and urban icon. However, symbols involve perceptions and such issues are invariably complex, manifesting in multiple layers, and changing over time. The text reminds us that there is no simple explanation for the power of a symbol such as this, especially one that's been with us for over a couple of millennia. There is also interesting info on the physical character of the Capitoline wolf itself, touching on the ongoing controversy as to whether this work of art is indeed a classical or a medieval creation. A boon to the Anglophone audience since most of the literature is in Italian and other European languages.
