About the Author
Christopher E. Brennen is Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at the California Institute of Technology. He has published over 200 refereed articles and is especially well known for his research on cavitation, turbomachinery flows, as well as multiphase flows. The author shows that this is not the case, and then proceeds to a fairer analysis and classification of the metres actually used by Persian poets, based on a wide cross-section of Persian poetry. A final section suggests lines of research necessary to establish the sources of these metres and their links with pre-Islamic verse, popular verse and the patterns of ordinary speech. Wendy Z. Goldman is Professor in the Department of History at Carnegie Mellon University. She has contributed articles to numerous edited collections and journals, including Slavic Review and the American Historical Review. She is also the author of several books, including Terror and Democracy in the Age of Stalin: The Social Dynamics of Repression (Cambridge University Press, 2007), Women at the Gates: Gender and Industry in Stalin's Russia (Cambridge University Press, 2002) and Women, the State and Revolution: Soviet Family Policy in Social Life, 1917-1936 (Cambridge University Press, 1993).

Fascinating book

This is a fascinating look at the phenomenon of denunciation in Stalin's Russia that shows just how impossible it was to live through this period without incriminating oneself or getting sucked into the vortex of terror in some way. Easy to read, with lots of specific examples of individuals caught in the Soviet web, anyone could enjoy this book. While much of the basic information will be familiar to specialists, the author's presentation and inclusion of individual cases and stories about families, and women in particular, makes this a worthwhile read for experts in the field, as well.

Children and the Purification of Regime Cities

Goldman has assembled important research, intelligently presented, for anyone researching the fate of children related to those who became categorized as "enemies" of the USSR. The author's careful detail is invaluable. For example, on July 5, 1937 the Politburo stipulated "... that children under the age of fifteen should be taken to orphanages, while the fate of older children would be decided individually. All children of "enemies" were to be prohibited from living in regime cities such as Moscow, Leningrad, and Kiev." This explains the many children who were born and schooled in these cities but pop up unexpectedly in far-flung regions where they may become street urchins. The "regime" cities, therefore, acquired a special character, both highly desirable and Stalinist approved. The natural draw that such important cities as Moscow, Leningrad, and Kiev had through their history, cultural institutions and many advantages, now served as an incentive in all who aspired to live there to strict loyalty and even enthusiasm for the official USSR narrative. Living in these cities in the USSR had a halo effect unimaginable in the U.S. today.

About the Author
William Brown is the Master of Darwin College and Professor of Industrial Relations in the Economics Faculty at Cambridge University. He was previously Director of the ESRC's Industrial Relations Research Unit at the University of Warwick. His research has been concerned with collective bargaining, pay determination, incomes policy, payment systems, arbitration, minimum wages, and the impact of legislative change. His publications include Piecework Bargaining (1973), The Changing Contours of British Industrial Relations (1981), The Individualisation of Employment Contracts in Britain (1998) and The Evolution of the Modern Workplace (2009). He was a foundation member of the Low Pay Commission, which fixes the UK's National Minimum Wage and is now a member of the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) Panel of Arbitrators, the Union Modernisation Fund Advisory Board. In 2002 he was awarded a CBE for services to employment relations.

Andrew Fabian is the Vice-Master of Darwin College and Royal Society Professor of Astronomy at the Institute of Astronomy in the University of Cambridge. His research interests centre on black holes and clusters of galaxies. He has organised several previous Darwin Lecture Series (Origins in 1986, Evolution in 1995 and Conflict, with Martin Jones, in 2005). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and was awarded an OBE in 2006.

It is argued that by the middle of the third century BC Egypt was much more thoroughly monetised than is usually assumed, but that the degree of monetisation was sustained only by an extensive credit economy as well as ad hoc commutation of monetary payments into kind. Contextualising the complexities of credit and banking in rural Egypt, the book offers a fresh picture of their function in the ancient economy.

About the Author
Mark D. Stansbury-O'Donnell is a professor of art history at the University of St Thomas in St Paul, Minnesota. He is the author of Pictorial Narrative in Ancient Greek Art (Cambridge University Press, 1999) and Vase Painting, Gender, and the Social Identity of Archaic Athens (Cambridge University Press, 2006). He has published in the American Journal of Archaeology and has contributed to several other books on Greek art and vase painting.

Great reference for professors and students

I have assigned this book as a supplement to Pedley's survey of Greek Art and Archaeology for my course (of the same name).

Stansbury-O'Donnell is a respected author in the field, although his work concentrates more on theory, the experience of viewing, construction of compositions and narrative, etc. rather than strictly archaeological work, or study in Classics.

This book was written as an aid for teaching college students how to examine, analyze, and write about Greek Art and Archaeology. It is founded upon both research, and the author's teaching experience. The book presents a great introduction to the various ways we look at Greek Art - in the museum context, in the classroom, and how we reconstruct ancient meaning and use of the various items we study. It is an essential volume for professors teaching 200- or 300-level Greek Art and Archaeology courses. The book addresses viewing, analysis, contemporary methodologies, etc., and provides the training and framework students need to prepare and write a research paper in Greek Art and Archaeology.

It's a great volume that I expect will significantly aid my students. I'll report back with students' opinions when the course is over.

The book came quickly and was in wonderful condition. It is very informative and well written however, I cannot image reading it for any reason other that to go along with a class on Greek Art since in deals primarily with analysis of the objects as works of art.

Catherine Ross Nickerson is Associate Professor of American Studies at Emory University, Atlanta. She is the author of The Web of Iniquity: Early Women Writers of Detective Fiction (1998) and she has edited two volumes of reprinted novels from early detective fiction: Anna Katharine Green, Lost Man's Lane and that Affair Next Door and Metta Victor, The Dead Letter and the Figure Eight (both 2003). She has also received the 2011 George N. Dove Award for Contributions to the Study of Crime Fiction.

An academic text.

The prospective reader of this book should be aware of what it is and what it is not. It is not a book targeted at the general reader who is interested in learning about the mystery genre. It is a book of literary criticism aimed at academics, and I suspect that as that, it is fairly good. It assumes a familiarity with a large number of works, some well known, some fairly obscure. It also is more concerned with topics such as feminism, racism, and post modernism than in who wrote what when, and who wrote the best mysteries. The general reader is probably better served with books such as Julian Symoms' "Bloody Murder" or P. D. James' "Talking About Detective Fiction".

Europe after Empire is a pioneering comparative history of European decolonization from the formal ending of empires to the postcolonial European present. Elizabeth Buettner charts the long-term development of post-war decolonization processes as well as the histories of inward and return migration from former empires which followed. About the Author
Elizabeth Buettner joined the University of Amsterdam as Professor of Modern History in 2014, prior to which she taught at the University of York. She received her BA from Barnard College of Columbia University and her MA and PhD from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. In 2012-2013, she held a Senior Research Fellowship at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies in Germany in conjunction with a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship, and in 2006 she was selected to participate in the International Research Seminar on Decolonization sponsored by the National History Center, the Mellon Foundation, and the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. Her publications include Empire Families: Britons and Late Imperial India (2004), which was awarded the Women's History Network Book Prize and led to her being shortlisted for the Young Academic Author of the Year award by the Times Higher Education Supplement in 2005. She has written articles in the Journal of Modern History, the Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History, History and Memory, the Scottish Historical Review (where her piece won the Royal Historical Society's David Berry Prize), Annales de Démographie Historique, Ab Imperio, and Food and History. Contributions to edited collections include the chapter 'Ethnicity' in A Concise Companion to History, edited by Ulinka Rublack (2011).
