Francisco de Quevedo was known throughout seventeenth-century Europe as the author of two Spanish best-sellers, the picaresque novel El buscón, and the satirical Sueños. Thoroughly Baroque in style, the poems share many traits with the metaphysical poetry of Quevedo's English contemporaries. His poetry has been a major influence on modern Spanish and Latin American poets. This study of the poetry combines a stylistic analysis with a philosophical interpretation in the broad sense. It is thus an aesthetic and existential study and concentrates on the love sonnets of 'High Style'. The poet confronts the courtly tradition with experience, taking a stand against its ethical restrictions. By means of irony and conceptismo, the wit displayed in his poetic conceits, Quevedo attempts to solve the conflict between ideal love and sensual passion. Professor Olivares also shows that the thoughts and emotions evoked by the experience of love are inseparable from Quevedo's anguished world vision.

Expensive worksheets

This is one of the worst "teacher resources" I have encountered. This amounts to nothing more than an expensive collection of worksheets. I understand this is supposed to be college level material but this whole book feels more like a study guide than it does a textbook. This teacher's resource cd solidified the fact this book is poorly made. The worksheets are nothing more than a few problems thrown together as a supplement to the material we are supposed to teach for each section. The amount of material you receive for the cost is simply too disproportionate. I sincerely expected so much more for the cost.

This item received a 3 star rating because the disc adds a little more functionality to the book, which is a whole different issue. I do like that it includes labs for each section in a clear and concise manner. The CD is easy to use, and the materials and resources are separated by chapter and then by section. Works okay for what it is intended, but I simply cannot justify the price. If the price drops, it is worth a purchase, but do not pay full price, there just isn't enough here for what they are charging.

About the Author
John Bray obtained a PhD from the University of Birmingham in 1997, which was followed by postdoctoral positions at Birmingham and Queen Mary. He has held a lectureship at Queen Mary, University of London, since 2007. He is heavily involved with the online web-atlas of group representations, a popular resource in the group theory community.

Derek Holt has been at the University of Warwick since 1978, where he was made a professor in 2001. He has been active in group theory research for over 40 years and has over 100 publications to his name. He was awarded the LMS Junior Whitehead Prize in 1981 for his solution to the long-standing problem of classifying groups with more than one end. He has co-authored several books including the influential graduate text Handbook of Computational Group Theory (2005). He is Editor-in-Chief of the London Mathematical Society Journal of Computation and Mathematics, and is on the editorial board of several other journals.

Colva Roney-Dougal received a PhD from Queen Mary, University of London, in 2001, following which she held postdoctoral positions in Sydney and St Andrews. She has been a lecturer at St Andrews since 2005 and was appointed to Senior Lecturer in 2010. Her research on the classification of primitive permutation groups has been turned into highly-used databases in MAGMA and GAP. In addition, she is heavily involved in the popularisation of mathematics, and in this capacity is a regular presence on Radio 4's 'In Our Time' with Melvyn Bragg, as well as other national radio shows.

About the Author
Krislert Samphantharak is an Assistant Professor and the Charles Robins Faculty Scholar in the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies at the University of California, San Diego. He is also an affiliate at the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development (BREAD). He received his doctoral degree in economics from the University of Chicago. In addition to his research on household finance, other research interests include family business groups, unpredictable corruption and firm investment, firm's lobby spending and its effective tax rate, effect of sales tax on gasoline prices, and economic development of the economies in Southeast Asia.

Robert M. Townsend is the Elizabeth and James Killian Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He previously was the Charles E. Merriam Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Chicago, where he remains a Research Professor. His contributions to economic theory include the revelation principle, costly state verification, optimal multiperiod contracts, decentralization with private information, money with spatially separated agents, financial structure and growth, and forecasting the forecasts of others. His contributions to econometrics include the study of risk and insurance in developing countries. His work on village India was awarded the Frisch Medal in 1998.

About the Author
Edward W. (Jed) Frees is a Professor of Business at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and is holder of the Assurant Health Insurance Professorship of Actuarial Science. He is a Fellow of both the Society of Actuaries (SoA) and the American Statistical Association (ASA). Professor Frees is the author of Longitudinal and Panel Data (2004) and has published more than fifty articles in leading refereed academic journals.

regression and survival analysis with apps strickly for actuaries and financial analyst

This text covers regression techniques which the author views as the most commonly used statistical technique especially in the world of insurance and finance. Since the book is in a series for actuarial science I expected the presentation to be elementary to intermediate and to only cover regression. But some of the latter topics were quite advanced. In my mind survival analysis which is extremely important to actuaries and time series analysis which in very important to finance would not be covered as they do not fall into the category of regression. But thankfully they are included.

Some time series models such as polynomial functions of time can be viewed as linear regression models where time is the predictor variable for the response. But the main models like exponetial smoothing, Box-Jenkins and ARCH/GARCH which are the main ones applied in financial forecasting are really not regression in my view. But these too are covered in the book.

The book starts out in Chapter 1 with a very elementary review of statistics and simple forms of regression. Then Chapter 2-6 form part I which is titled Regression. Chapter 2 presents the basics of simple linear regression. Chapters 3 and 4 cover multiple regression. This is not a cookbook of techniques. The author provides background, historical developments and important concepts and mixes in applications to actuarial science and finance throughout. At the end of most chapters are a large number of exercises with solutions for selected problems in the back. In chapter 3 the author explains least squares presents the modeling assumptions and introduces the Gauss-Markovas well as all the standard concepts of hypothesis testing that a regression parameter is significant, R-square and theorem (hence also the concept of minimum variance among unbiased estimators). In Chapter 4 he provides the unified theme of the general linear hypothesis as he covers categorical predictor variables, the analysis of variance and covariance (all general linear models) In Chapter 5, leverage points, multicollinearity, and regression diagnostics are presented in the context of variable selection. Chapter 6 is all about interpretation and limitations.

Later in Parts III and IV the author introduces nonlinear regression models, logistic regression, probit and tobit models, Poisson and negative binomial regression, generalized linear models,and specialized techniques such as bootstrapping, mixed linear models, proportional hazards regression, generalized additive models and the Bayesian approach to regression. The coverage gets more advanced as you move through the chapters

Part II on time series includes seasonal models, discussion of stationary and longitudinal and panel data models.

In Part III survival analysis is included in Chapter 14. This includes the Kaplan-Meier estimates, proportional hazards regression, accelerated failure time models and even the analysis of recurrent events.

Part IV specifically focuses on actuarial applications and it is here that heavytailed distributions are dealt with using quantile regression and extreme value probability models.

With such an extensive list of topics the book is a large volume of over 560 pages. But even so it is not possible to do justice to this extensive list. The author provides an outstanding list of references at the end of the chapters that provides additional reading on the various topics.

In addition the author prvides programs in SAS and R as well as output form these packages. More detailed examples and projects can be found on the books website.

Kai Hafez is a Professor (Chair) and currently also the Director of the Department of Media and Communication Studies at the University of Erfurt, Germany. A Thoughtful Review of Nuclear Proliferation

Finally someone has pieced together most of the factors that cause a state to consider building nuclear weapons and succeed. Jacques Hymans has studied a number of states and reached conclusions that may upset the common wisdom. He points out how few states have had successful nuclear weapons programs in the last decades and analyzes the reasons for failure. The role of informed management, competent technical staff, revered leadership and program management turn out to be major factors in success. Hymans uses statistics and data to make his case. He is very open about his choice of data and is willing to consider that some variables cannot be accurately qualified. That said, his intellectual honesty makes for a satisfying book.

This is a must read for serious nuclear nonproliferation analysts.

Ethan H. Shagan is Associate Professor of History and Director for the Center for British Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. This is a much-revised version of Professor Cottret's acclaimed study of the Huguenot communities in England, first published in French by Aubier in 1985. The Huguenots in England presents a detailed, sympathetic assessment of one of the great migrations of early modern Europe, examining the social origins, aspirations and eventual destiny of the refugees, and their responses to their new-found home, a Protestant terre d'exil. Bernard Cottret shows how for the poor weavers, carders and craftsmen who constituted the majority of the exiles the experience of religious persecution was at once personal calamity, disruptive of home and family, and heaven-sent economic opportunity, which many were quick to exploit. The individual testimonies contained in consistory registers contain a wealth of personal narrative, reflection and reaction, enabling Professor Cottret to build a fully rounded picture of the Huguenot experience in early modern England. In an extended afterword Professor Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie considers the Huguenot phenomenon in the wider context of the contrasting British and French attitudes to religious minorities in the early modern period.
