About the Author
James Mullaney, a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society of London, is an astronomy writer, lecturer and consultant. He has published more than 500 articles and seven books on observing the wonders of the heavens.

Wil Tirion is a full-time uranographer. He is famous for the numerous star charts he has created for astronomy books, atlases and magazines. The minor planet, 4648 Tirion (1931 UE), is named after him.

missing NGC references in charts

I just received this atlas and noticed a glaring problem, at least for me. The charts reference the various objects using the original Herschel designations; you can only find the NGC numbers in the various tables. While the Herschel designations are historically interesting, the NGC designations are really essential in the charts for ease of referencing other lists and texts. The authors are probably trying to keep the charts "cleaner", but an observer really needs to see the NGC designation at a glance. To find them in the tables, you must look up the object by RA and DEC, as the original Herschel designations are not in any specific order. This takes time, especially at the telescope where you would use the atlas.

Comments on the objects, especially the table with the best 200 or so Herschel objects are useful. The charts themselves are similar to many other Tirion maps, clear and easily readable.

Herschel Atlas

Excellent atlas. Exactly what has been needed for anybody that wants to star hop the skies for Herschel objects, since the Herschel designations are listed without having to look up the designations based on NGC numbers. Every other atlas lists NGC numbers, one showing Herschel designations is what was sorely needed and this one fits the bill. In addition there is a complete listing of Herschel objects in the back of the atlas arrainged by RA. The atlas includes John Herschels objects too. On the fainter class 2 and 3 objects a more detailed atlas may be needed but this one will get you in the correct field anyway. I should mention I star hop to objects and will not use GOTO technology to track down any objects. Those that use GOTO will probably need the NGC numbers and this may not be the atlas for you. The atlas itself is wire bound and lays flat on the table. It shows up well using red light flashlights at the telescope. It has constellation stick figures drawn in which may or may not be a blessing. I tend to see the constellations different from most atlases and prefer to draw my own lines in, but your view may differ. Nebula, clusters and galaxies are color coded, M objects are marked. Typical outstanding Tirion quality. 32 charts cover the entire sky. Scale is about 4 degrees per inch. Covers are coated but pages are not so dew may be a problem if you leave it open long at the telescope.

Good Atlas with one quibble

A good Atlas, finely detailed and useful for objects other than the Herschel's. However, it would be more helpful to have the NGC numbers of the objects, and save the traditional numbers for the index. NGC 772 is more useful than H I 112. No quibbles with the merits or accuracy of the Atlas in and of itself.

About the Author
David A. Freedman (1938-2008) was Professor of Statistics at the University of California, Berkeley. He was a distinguished mathematical statistician whose theoretical research included the analysis of martingale inequalities, Markov processes, de Finetti's theorem, consistency of Bayes estimators, sampling, the bootstrap, and procedures for testing and evaluating models of methods for causal inference. Freedman published widely on the application - and misapplication - of statistics in works within a variety of social sciences, including epidemiology, demography, political science, public policy, and law. He emphasized exposing and checking the assumptions that underlie standard methods, as well as understanding how those methods behave when the assumptions are false - for example, how regression models behave when fitted to data from randomized experiments. He had a remarkable talent for integrating carefully honed statistical arguments with compelling empirical applications and illustrations. Freedman was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and in 2003 he received the National Academy of Science's John J. Carty Award, for his 'profound contributions to the theory and practice of statistics'.

David Collier is Robson Professor of Political Science at University of California, Berkeley. His current work focuses on conceptualization and measurement and on causal inference in qualitative and multi-method research. He is co-author of Rethinking Social Inquiry: Diverse Tools, Shared Standards and co-editor of two recent volumes: The Oxford Handbook of Political Methodology and Concepts and Method in Social Science. A central concern of his research is with the contribution of detailed case knowledge to causal inference and concept formation.

Jasjeet S. Sekhon is Associate Professor of Political Science at University of California, Berkeley. His current research focuses on methods for causal inference in observational and experimental studies and evaluating social science, public health, and medical interventions. Professor Sekhon has done research on elections, voting behavior, and public opinion in the United States; multivariate matching methods for causal inference; machine learning algorithms for irregular optimization problems; robust estimators with bounded influence functions; health economic cost effectiveness analysis; and the philosophy and history of inference and statistics in the social sciences.

Philip B. Stark is Professor of Statistics at University of California, Berkeley. His research centers on inference problems, focusing on quantifying the uncertainty in inferences that rely on numerical models of complex physical systems. Professor Stark has done research on the Big Bang, causal inference, the US census, chemical spectroscopy, earthquake prediction, election auditing, food web models, the geomagnetic field, geriatric hearing loss, information retrieval, Internet content filters, nonparametrics, the seismic structure of the Earth and Sun, and spectrum estimation. He has served as an expert witness on statistics for government and industry in state and federal courts.

A good collection of articles by the author.

This is not a textbook. Rather it is a collection of articles written by the author and his collaborators. Some articles are more interesting than others. Some are more difficult to read as they required certain background for the issues that the author was trying to address. Overall, it is a good book and a great reminder that there are lots of assumptions made in statistics. You need to revisit all these assumptions on every problem you encounter. Don't just believe what newspaper headlines say.

This is how to do statistical analysis

I am not familiar with all the authors, but this book has Freedman's finger prints all over it.

In the book, many of our known social problems are reviewed and discussed with a deeper statistical view than earlier writers on the topics. For example, the evidence that the outbreak of the Guillaume Barre syndrome was strongly related to vaccines is shown to be weaker than many have believed.

For many scientists, this book will be very interesting.

About the Author
Martin Dean is an Applied Research Scholar at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies in Washington, DC. He received a scholarship in History from Queens' College, Cambridge, in 1980 and was awarded his PhD also at Queens' in 1989. His publications include Collaboration in the Holocaust: Crimes of the Local Police in Belorussia and Ukraine, 1941-44 (2000); Austrian Policy during the French Revolutionary Wars, 1796-99 (1993); and numerous articles. He has also worked as a Staff Historian for the Australian Special Investigations Unit and as the Senior Historian for the Metropolitan Police War Crimes Unit in London (1992-7). He has held a DAAD grant and was awarded the Pearl Resnick Post-Doctoral Fellowship by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 1997. He has acted as an expert witness in Nazi war crimes cases in Australia and Germany.

About the Author
Beth Luey is the founding director emerita of the Scholarly Publishing Program at Arizona State University and has edited books for many university presses and textbook publishers. She has been the editor of Documentary Editing and Publishing Research Quarterly and is a past president of the Association for Documentary Editing and the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading, and Publishing. She has won numerous teaching awards, as well as the Lyman Butterfield Award from the Association for Documentary Editing, and has published articles in Book History, Documentary Editing, Publishing Research Quarterly, and the Journal of Scholarly Publishing. Must-read information for any scholar writing a book

Short review: if you're writing a scholarly book (dissertation to print; monograph; edited volume; or textbook) then buy this and read it. It will answer more questions that you even know you have.

Longer review
I'm working on a monograph and this volume was highly recommended to me by a colleague who has published 2 books. For a while I told myself, "oh, I can find all that online" but wow, am I glad I bought and read this instead! It cleared up many misperceptions and gave me much insight into the process.

The book is written as advice to authors but the most valuable content is its thorough exposition of the publishing process and especially how and why publishers work the way they do. It includes most of the requisite types of information that you would expect: the various types of publishers, the steps in the process, how submissions, reviews, and editing work, and so forth. It's well worth it for the clear exposition of those processes.

What was unexpected and made it much more valuable was the clear presentation of the publisher's point of view. What does it really cost to publish a book? What are the various goals of publishers? Why is it better to consider authors and publishers to be a team? If you have questions such as, "why are royalty percentages what they are?" or "how will my book be promoted?" or "will the publisher get rich at my expense?" this book will answer your questions simply and well. By clarifying all of that, I feel that it has saved me an enormous amount of speculation and worrying, and clarified the publisher relationship in a very helpful way.

The general tone is one of encouragement but honesty. It helped me realistically sort out some of the options, feel pretty good about the track I'm on, and rule out some other projects before wasting time on them. Your value may vary, but if even one of these areas hits home then it is well worth the investment to read.

And, by the way, it's published by Cambridge (not necessarily reflective of them) and in its 5th edition. That speaks to how we should all aspire as authors (to be represented by the best publishers and to need future editions) and demonstrates how Luey walks the walk as well as she explains it.

A History that May be Relavant to the Future

This book is primarily a book on the history of copyright laws and how they have been forced to change as technological developments have occurred. A simple history would be one thing, but this book further asserts that this history is relavant to the present day technological challenges. The book looks at the present challenges to the international system as 'fresh presentations of familiar dilemmas which copyright law has attempted to address in the past.'

The history, as presented here, does show a remarkable set of similar problems, but they all seem to address a lawful, reasonable world rather than the anarchy that I see in the Internet.

For instance, a few years ago a web server I was running was all of a sudden using an incredible amount of bandwidth. Neither I nor the teckies could find out why. Then we got a letter from an attorney of one of the movie companies. My server was being used to send out copies of a front run movie. Based on this we were able to find that someone had surrepticiously loaded a program onto my server to do this. We then stopped it.

But from a legal standpoint how do you control this. The bad guy could have been from Africa, China or across town, there was no way to tell. There are 'outlaw' countries that would not help to enforce copyrights - Korea and Iran come to mind. There are countries where enforcement is so lax that no one would care - most of Africa.

This is an excellent history and does have some applicability to the control of things like printed books.

Monumental Work

Cook has achieved something special in this work. He demonstrates that he is a rare and gifted scholar with an awesome ability to intregrate vast seas of thought into one coherent whole. This work covers "Commanding Right and Forbidding Wrong" from its origins in the Koran up until modern times, though he focuses upon the classical period throughout the vast majority of his book. All sects with a significant body of material are represented. Why this topic?-- Basically, this doctrine has historically proved to be the major foundation of any Islamic social ethic; therefore, how it is concieved usually predetermines how one thinks justice ought to be established in this word or by whom it should be established. Cook possesses a talent for giving seemingly distant and irrelevant doctrines a timely relation to today insofar as his studies illuminates how two different cultures approach moral actions in their respective societies. About the Author
Ismael Vaccaro teaches anthropology and environmental studies at McGill University and is the director of the Neotropical Program managed in collaboration with the Smithsonian Tropical Institute.

Eric Alden Smith co-founded and directed the Environmental Anthropology Graduate Program at the University of Washington and served as President of the Evolutionary Anthropology Society. He has published extensively on systems of production and reproduction in various small-scale societies, and currently codirects an NSF IGERT program.

Shankar Aswani is a recipient of the prestigious Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation (2005), the first time in its 15-year history that the world's premier award in marine conservation has been given to an anthropologist. He has collaborated in the development of a network of locally managed Marine Protected Areas and small-scale rural development projects in the Solomon Islands.

About the Author
Ronald Collins is a scholar at the First Amendment Center in Washington, D.C. He is a noted authority on free speech law. His last book, The Trials of Lenny Bruce (with David Skover), was selected by the Los Angeles Times as one of the best books of the year. Collins is also the co-author (with Sam Chaltain) of the forthcoming We Must Not Be Afraid to Be Free: Stories of Free Speech in America and the editor of Constitutional Government in America. His scholarly articles have appeared in the Harvard Law Review, the Stanford Law Review and the Supreme Court Review, among other places.

Important Insights into Justice Holmes

I just happened to pick this book up in a secondhand store here in Washington, because I am very interested in Holmes. When I started reading it, I was just amazed. This most definitely is not a standard "reader" with selected excerpts relating to the subject loosely tied together with brief comments. Rather, in order to place OWH's views on free expression in context, the editor has produced something approaching an intellectual biography, tracing Holmes' intellectual development (not just relating to free speech) from childhood until death. The editor introduces the reader to OWH and the his editorial approach via a thorough chronology, followed up by an introductory "prologue" on Holmes as "The Father of the Modern First Amendment." The book is divided into six parts, and within each the editor writes extensive supplemental material to accompany the excerpts from Holmes' own writings and related materials. The editor's own contributions are often more extensive than the excerpts--the editor really knows Holmes and his writings and can point out important points as the material develops.

First up, Part I, is "On Life and War," focusing upon the impact of Holmes' Civil War Service. Next comes "The Early Writings, followed by the "State Court Years: Fetttered Freedoms." Part IV deals with "Supreme Court Opinions: The Early Years," then opinions delivered "When a nation is at war." Finally, Part VI deals with more opinions as Holmes is "experimenting with freedom." The editor has selected excerpts from a wide variety of sources: books, law review articles, court opinions, correspondence, and press accounts. Too often, the editor suggests, one is presented only with a slew of famous OWH Supreme Court opinions on free expression, which while fine does lack the context of how OWH developed these views during his lifetime. For example, the editor suggests that Holmes' Civil War experiences helped to develop his eventual views on free expression, and makes an interesting case for this assertion. In an insightful epilogue ("The Long Shadow"), the editor draws it all together and discusses OWH's free expression legacy.

This is a most unusual book, and it vibrates with significance due to the editor's superb commentaries and his incisive selection of materials for inclusion. The book contains two appendices and a great frontispiece photo of Holmes' study at 1720 "I" Street here in Washington. This book is simply one of the best things I have ever read on Holmes...and I have read a lot over the last 40 years or so. Any serious student of Holmes, or anyone interested in the law of free expression, would find this essential reading. The editor is to be commended.
