About the Author
Beverley Baines is a Professor of Law, Gender Studies, and Policy Studies at Queen's University. Since 2005, she has served as Head, Department of Gender Studies. Since co-editing The Gender of Constitutional Jurisprudence with Ruth Rubio-Marin (2004), she has authored papers on sex equality jurisprudence under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms; the implications of long-term care homes legislation for women; feminism and contextualism in the jurisprudence of former Supreme Court of Canada Justice Bertha Wilson; and the Charter conflicts posed for feminist sex equality proponents by religious freedom claimants in the contexts of polygamy (in Canada), faith-based family arbitrations (in Ontario) and multicultural accommodation (in Quebec).

Daphne Barak-Erez is a Professor of Law at the Faculty of Law of Tel-Aviv University, where she holds the Stewart and Judy Colton Chair of Law and Security. She specializes in administrative law, constitutional law, comparative law and gender law. She is the recipient of several prizes, including the Rector's Prize for Excellence in Teaching (twice), the Zeltner Prize, the Woman of the City Award (by the City of Tel Aviv) and the Women in Law Award (by the Israeli Bar Association). She is the author and editor of three books, most recently, the author of Outlawed Pigs (2007) and the co-editor of Exploring Social Rights (2007), and has published more than seventy articles.

Tsvi Kahana is an Assistant Professor of Law at the Faculty of Law, Queen's University. He is the co-editor (with Richard W. Bauman) of The Least Examined Branch: The Role of Legislatures in the Constitutional State (2006). He works in the area of constitutional law and theory with a particular emphasis on the role of legislatures. He is also the co-editor of the Review of Constitutional Studies. Between 2000 and 2004 he was the Executive Director of the Centre for Constitutional Studies at the University of Alberta.

About the Author
Professor W. Cary Huffman graduated with a PhD in mathematics from the California Institute of Technology in 1974. He taught at Dartmouth College and Union College until he joined the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Loyola in 1978, serving as chair of the department from 1986 through 1992. He is an author of approximately 40 research papers in finite group theory, combinatorics, and coding theory that have appeared in journals such as the Journal of Algebra, IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, and the Journal of Combinatorial Theory.

VERA PLESS is Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science and a University Scholar at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Professor Pless holds a PhD in mathematics from Northwestern University.

Charles Blacker Vignoles (1793-1875) has been somewhat overshadowed by his contemporaries, the Stephensons, Brunel and Locke. Among his achievements were the Tudela and Bilbao Railway in northern Spain, and the suspension bridge spanning the River Dnieper at Kiev, Russia, which at the time of its completion was one of the largest bridges of its kind in the world. This account, originally published in 1982, is based on a close study of original records, including a large volume of correspondence as well as Vignoles' extensive diaries in the British Library. The aim of the book is to put his engineering achievements into perspective in comparison with those of his contemporaries, and by drawing on his own account of himself to illuminate the personal background of one of the great pioneers of the Victorian age of civil engineering.

Jianguo (Jack) Liu is Rachel Carson Chair in Sustainability and University Distinguished Professor as well as Director of the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability (CSIS) at Michigan State University. John A. Wiens is Chief Conservation Science Officer at PRBO Conservation Science, former Lead and Chief Scientist at The Nature Conservancy and former Distinguished Professor at Colorado State University. His broad interests include landscape ecology and the ecology of birds and insects in arid environments. An excellent guide to AS3600 based design

This book is an excellent aide for any undergraduate studying concrete design to AS3600. It does a great job of explaining how to follow and apply the standards in both the analysis and design of concrete beams and slabs. It comes with many worked examples and practice problems. The only criticism I have is that I felt two-way flat slab design supported by columns could have used a clearer explanation. Otherwise - highly recommended.

Donald L. Drakeman is a Lecturer in the Department of Politics at Princeton University. He is the author of Church-State Constitutional Issues, and his writings have appeared in Constitutional Commentary, Journal of Church and State, American Journal of Legal History, The Christian Century, Religion and American Culture and several law reviews. He is also co-editor of Church and State in American History. He has served as legal counsel for a coalition of religious organizations acting as friends of the Court in federal church-state litigation, and he has been a member of the Religious Liberty Committee of the National Council of Churches and the Civil Rights Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. He is a co-founder and Chairman of the Advisory Council of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University and a former co-chair of the Advisory Council for Princeton's Department of Religion.

Understanding Church/State Conflict Development

Church, State, and Original IntentThis book provides a clear understanding of how historical analysis of the thinking behind the wall of separation between church and state occurred through Supreme Court decisions over the last sixty-five years. Drakeman documents the opinions and the influence various historians had upon the thinking of Supreme Court justices. It is a fascinating book that provides insight as to the broad interpretation that has followed a Constitutional protection that the founding fathers intended to ban a government mandated religion while providing the individual rights to practice religion as he or she felt was proper. Drakeman traces the erosion of this right over a series of Supreme Court decisions and suggests that we find ourselves in an increasingly restricted interpretation as to what role government can play in support of religious practice without interfering with individual rights to exercise secular humanism, if that is their choice. What started as an attempt, sparked by the Virginia delegation of Jefferson and Madison, to protect the new republic from being subjected to a government dictated religious practice, similar to the Church of England at the time, has grown into a series of restrictions barring prayer in public school settings, displays of religious observance at holidays, and removal of items as the Ten Commandments from public government settings, such as schoolhouses and courthouses. Drakeman presents a cogent, engaging and well documented attack on these opinions, citing the case for misinterpretation of the founding father's goals resulting in restrictions never contemplated by our Constitution. This is a must read for anyone interested in religious freedoms or erosion of Constitutional freedoms.

Church, state, and two hundred years of special pleading history

Exhaustively researched, meticulously footnoted, clearly and cogently written, Don Drakeman's book accomplishes the extremely difficult and seldom accomplished feat of thoroughly exploring what is both an extremely esoteric and inherently controversial nook in the cluttered closet of American jurisprudential historiography without dragging along his own ponderous axe desperately in need of grinding. In other words, actually the words of Sgt. Friday, - "Just the facts, ma'am." As has been often said, you're entitled to your own opinions, but not your own facts. This book details how the historical background of the Separation Clause have been bent, twisted, ignored, inflated, conflated and confounded in two hundred years of judicial decisions and parochial (in several senses) scholarship. At the end of the day, Mr. Drakeman's combination of rigorous scholarship and all too uncommon common-sense analysis decisively undercuts any future attempts to build church/state separation edifices on a historical foundation of strawless bricks.

Not a light summer read, for sure, but a book worthy of the effort required to comprehend it.

About the Author
Gregory S. Alexander is a nationally renowned expert in property and trusts and estates and the A. Robert Noll Professor of Law at Cornell University, New York. Following his graduation from Northwestern University School of Law, he clerked for the Honorable George Edwards of the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Alexander is the winner of the American Publishers Association's 1997 Best Book of the Year in Law award for his work, Commodity and Propriety. More recent books include The Global Debate over Constitutional Property: Lessons for American Takings Jurisprudence and Property and Community (with Eduardo M. Peñalver). He is co-author of the most widely used property casebook in the United States (with James Krier and Michael Schill). His articles have appeared in such journals as the Columbia Law Review, the Stanford Law Review, the Michigan Law Review and the Cornell Law Review.

Eduardo M. Peñalver is a Professor of Law at Cornell University, New York. Upon graduating from Yale Law School, he clerked for the Honorable Guido Calabresi of the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and for Justice John Paul Stevens of the US Supreme Court. His research interests focus on property and land use, as well as law and religion. He is particularly interested in the ways that property both fosters and reflects social bonds. He is the author of numerous books and articles on property and land use law and his work has appeared in several leading law journals. His book, Property Outlaws (co-authored with Sonia Katyal), explores the role of disobedience in the evolution of property law.
