India made Rudyard Kipling. What does India today make of Kipling?

Only eight months ago, in October 2011, Howard J. Booth, lecturer at the University of Manchester, published THE CAMBRIDGE COMPANION TO RUDYARD KIPLING. In addition to his own excellent editorial Introduction, Howard Booth has collected penetrating monographs in English by 13 authors from America, Scotland, England, New Zealand, India and Italy -- including his own Chapter 10, "The later short fiction.".

The thirteen specialists discuss Kipling's explosive 1889 arrival from India to London by way of the USA. They probe Kipling as spokesman for and critic of the British Empire. One showcases, as well, the extraordinary and rarely noticed relationships of Rudyard Kipling with the USA (which produced his closest male friend, his wife, their Vermont-born children and more); another flags his pioneering fascination with technology and science fiction. Rudyard Kipling (1865 - 1936) was born in Bombay, India, lived there for six years and and returned from England and worked there aged 16 - 23 as a journalist and editor in two cities of Queen Victoria's Indian Raj: Lahore and Allahabad. During his journalistic years he published hundreds of poems, essays and short stories. After his marriage and especially during his years living in Vermont (1892 - 1996) where he wrote the two JUNGLE BOOKS, Rudyard Kipling wrote again and again of India. Not much later he published his masterpiece of India, KIM (1901).

Kipling arrived in London in late 1889. Almost immediately his Indian-set "Ballad of East and West" was published. He was overnight the talk of London. He dominated the year 1890. He made British India known to Britons and Americans. In London he published THE NAULAHKA: A STORY OF WEST AND EAST (1892) in which he imagined the mutual cross-cultural incomprehension when a young woman and man from Colorado spent several months among native royalty in Rajputana.

India is mentioned, if memory serves, in every single one of the 13 monographs. Kipling's India is singled out in four:

Chapter 2. India and empire by John McBratney,
Chapter 9. Kim by Patrick Brantlinger,
Chapter 11. Kipling and postcolonial literature by Bart Moore-Gilbert,
and
Chapter 13. Reading Kipling in India by Harish Trivedi.

All thirteen essays are of very high quality. Let Trivedi's serve as a good example for all. Trevi has taught English at the Universities of Chicago and London. He is a fixture of the University of Delhi. His basic question is: how well do today's Indians know Rudyard Kipling? The English made themselves the paramount power in India from 1757 to 1947. According to the 2001 census only 226,449 Indians declared English their mother tongue. Even Oriya, the tenth most widely spoken language in India, had 33 million native speakers. "No more than one percent of the Indian population (NOTE: of more than one billion) can, or is likely to, read a book in English for pleasure. However, even one percent of the Indian population is more than ten million people" (p.189). Among the educated elite, readers of Rudyard Kipling included independent India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru as well as his mentor Mohandas Gandhi himself. Some "post-colonial" Indians attack Kipling. Others, notably Sudhakar Marathe of the University of Hyderabad passionately promote him. Many Indian writers have clearly been influenced by Kipling.

In conclusion, Professor Harish Trivedi reminds us that Kipling's first audience was British men and women resident in India. He might be surprised that today's Indians read him at all -- with love, hate and admiration.

A Must for every ESL teacher

Great book for adult students that want to learn or improve their English language skills. Colorful, very self explanatory with additional exercises. I like that it takes the students up a notch by integrating additional skills in the unit (example, contractions and negatives). Hesitant about buying with the CD Rom since there were no reviews at the time I purchased it. Highly recommend the CD. It not only brings fun, additional exercises, games and tests for the student to complete and track their progress (answers are submitted and scored). The tests aren't too complicated, but enough to measure if the student in fact does master the skill covered by the unit. You should also get the workbook that goes with this book. I use this as additional HW or even as tests for my students. They have all willingly purchased this book based on my recommendation and after comparing it with soooo many of the other books that I have bought and wasted my money in, they agree this is the best one and most comprehensive. Definitely a winner!

Thought Provoking

I came to this book as someone who is interested in how people make decisions when there are complex ethical and moral issues involved. Fortunately the book was quite accessible for a non-medical professional like me - the writing is clear and unencumbered and presents the issues in a straightforward fashion with no drama or preaching. Hard to do with such weighty issues I think... I was also amazed at how wide a shadow the issues cast - very basic social questions not just of life and death but questions of freedom and civil rights. Not light reading, but very informative and thought-provoking.

Interesting and Unusual.

This is a well-written textbook about the ethical issues involved in the practice of anesthesiology. This important topic is inadequately addressed in other textbooks and often underrepresented in residency training. The clinical based case approach and succinct analysis of each case keeps the book interesting to the clinician. Some of the cases seem a bit contrived and removed from typical clinical experience, but common and uncommon scenarios are discussed. The book is exceedingly well-written and for a multi-author textbook has minimal redundancy or contradiction between the chapters for what are controversial topics. The editor did a very nice job making this into a coherent single volume. The short analysis of common ethical problems begs further research for the truly interested reader, but provides a foundation for further exploration of the issue. Highly recommended for both trainees and practitioners, every physician delivering anesthesia care would be well-served by looking at this text.

He is the author of Abortion and Unborn Human Life (1996), and his articles and review essays have appeared in American Journal of Jurisprudence, Bioethics, Faith and Philosophy, Philosophy, The Thomist, International Philosophical Quarterly, and other scholarly journals, as well as popular journals and online magazines.

Robert P. George is McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and Director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University. He is a member of the President's Council on Bioethics and the Council of Foreign Relations, as well as a former member of the US Commission on Civil Rights. He is the author of numerous books, articles, and essays, including In Defense of Natural Law (1999) and The Clash of Orthodoxies (2001). An Outstanding Philosophical Critique of Dualism

Lee and George have set forth a sophisticated refutation of the philosophical idea called "body-self dualism". At the heart of this philosophy is the view that humans persons are not deserving of moral respect in virtue of being whole, living, bodily human organisms, but in virtue of some quality which they develop over time, usually consciousness. It follows that human persons are something other than their bodies (not more than their bodies, but other than their bodies), that consciousness is personal but living bodies without consciousness are subpersonal. It further follows that those who are not yet conscious (e.g., embryos and fetuses), and those who have irretrievably lost consciousness (e.g., those in irreversible commas) are not persons and therefore may be treated instrumentally and even killed for the good of others. This reasoning underlies justifications for euthanasia, abortion and embryo destructive experimentation.
Lee and George set forth a basic argument in defense of the view that bodily (biological) life is an essential and intrinsic aspect of persons. They entertain extensive objections against this view. And then they put the view to work in relation to several contemporary controversial moral issues: hedonism and hedonistic drug taking, abortion, euthanasia and issues in sexual ethics.
The basic argument goes like this: sensation is a bodily act of a living being; therefore the agent that senses is a bodily entity, an animal; but in humans, the agent who senses also reasons and has self-awareness; therefore the agent who reasons and has self-awareness is a bodily entity, not a spiritual entity making use of the body as an extrinsic instrument.
Having established the animality of human beings, Lee and George in chapter two argue that human are nevertheless unique kinds of animals, animals with a radical difference from all other bodily beings, which requires that they be treated radically different from the way all other animals are treated. They argue, in other words, that the animal organism that constitutes the human being is a "person". And that the personhood claim is fully compatible with the animalist claim. This of course takes careful argument, which Lee and George execute masterfully.
Their `human organisms are human persons' argument has obvious and profound implications. For example, in chapter four it is used to address the issue of abortion. It leads to the conclusion that human embryos and fetuses are complete, though immature, human beings. But since human beings are human persons, embryos and fetuses are human persons. Since humans are deserving of full moral respect in virtue of being persons (i.e., in virtue of that which separates them from other animals), embryos and fetuses are deserving of full moral respect.
Similarly, in chapter five, treating euthanasia, they argue that since human beings remain persons throughout their entire duration as animal organisms (i.e., until organismic death), they retain the basis of their full moral worth -- and hence remain entitled to full moral respect --even when their health is diminished, even radically diminished by disease or incapacity.
Finally, in chapter six treating sex and the body Lee and George argue that since bodies are not extrinsic to persons but are fully personal, they cannot be treated as mere extrinsic tools in the pursuit of fulfillment by the conscious self. This indeed is how they are envisaged in contemporary forms of both sexual liberalism and libertinism, which, the authors argue, rely on an untenable dualistic conception of the person. They carefully argue that the traditional view that sexual activity is morally right only in marriage, and as open to new life and embodying marital unity, "is the only view consistent with the bodily nature of the human person."
The text is the most systematic and rigorous defense of the substantial unity of the human person available today and a most formidable critique of the body-self dualism that underlies much of today's liberal ethical reasoning. It provides the scholarly community and all intelligent persons interested in the questions it treats with sophisticated philosophical replies to some of the most pressing and indeed culture shaping moral questions of our day.

An interesting and valuable book, at least for those who consider solitary masturbation (or, of course, gay sex) to be a slippery slope towards promiscuity, incest, bestiality, pedophilia, etc....
